Agree, if you can read the game and know where to position yourself, you do t need to be Linford Christie.....Ledley wasn’t exactly quick
To be clear, I’m not saying that this makes for up for being a donkey, but lightning speed isn’t an absolute necessity in an organised defence

Ledley always struck me as being pretty rapid, even when his knees went and he was hardly training, he still had pace.

’Here are the master’s secrets. Anticipation: understand not just what is happening but what might take place. Be on the move: better to slip into place unnoticed off the ball than hammer hell for leather in pursuit, even though that might catch the eye of the uninitiated. Don’t commit too early: refuse to be drawn into tussles that can’t be won. Not too far away from the man he was marking or else lose him, not too close because risk being turned. Just the right place, right time. Turn quickly: superlative midfield maestros like Gazza or Modric drop their shoulder and are gone in the blink of an eye. Ledley did the same only in defence, on the move a fraction quicker than most, get ahead of the man, shoulder inside, make the tackle. Pace over five or ten yards: that’s what you need in the box. Quick off the mark, short jabbing strides like a sprinter out of the blocks, minimal clearance from the turf, all the effort geared towards one aim, to get their first.’

Ledley was really quick and had perfect positioning and a load of other top qualities. Henry said he was the only defender in the prem that could match him.

That being said according too Fabrizio Romano Jose thinks Skriniar is the best centre back in the world and is pushing for him hard.

I think Henry also said that King was one of the only PL defenders he faced that didn't rely on thuggery and shithousery to stop him.

Not elite, but the main CB pairing in a title winning team, Huth and Morgan.
But you have to remember that they had arguably one of the best CDM's in the world with a never ending engine to help protect them from a lot of threats

Ledley was deceptively quick. Maybe not super fast acceleration over the initial few yards but once he got into his stride seemed to eat up the yards with ease. Thing with him was his all round defensive game was so good, never really needed to rely heavily on his pace to get him out of trouble.

I'd rather a Skriniar and Brozovich double deal personally. Would balance out our midfield options splendidly - though I imagine it could only happen if Ndombele or Alli were going in the other direction. Broz situation one to keep an eye on nonetheless.

I did wonder about Lamela as part of any deal, possibly wanted back in italy.

So it looks like we are moving for this guy or Diop. Don‘t see the point in paying the Prem Premium for Diop when Milan seem to want rid of this guy. Surely there’s a deal to be done here?

I don’t like the idea of giving Gammon FC a whole chunk of money.

Spend it on Skriniar instead.

What is a realistic figure for Skriniar? What do people think Levy will deal at?

Personal opinion is, he’s a little leggy in the Dier / Toby club. Granted ive seen a very small sample of him playing but he doesn’t appear to be a defender who’s going to compliment either Eric or Toby particularly well.

Sanchez would be a better partner but is JM going to leave Dier (new 4 year deal) and Toby (newish 3 year deal) on the bench for large parts to pair a newly arrived CB from Italy and an inconsistent Sanchez. My gut tells me not.

Dias sounds a better fit for the squad and the current crop of CB’s. Just my onions me dears.

He is not a tortoise - he is not really slow anyway. From what I know he is just not comfortable in back3 because he has to positionally cover full backs space which he is not good at. Lets see - if we sign him, we should know straight away.
I was just pointing out that against weaker opposition we do go higher.

I dont really buy into the thinking that you need to be blisteringly quick to play a high line. Plenty of examples in Barcelona sides over the recent years.

Barcelona have circa 70% possession, game in game out. We don’t.

Your comparing apples with oranges.
