Their fan base ain't really that big. it's concentrated within a 20 mile radius and they benefit from being a one club city. I don't think they will ever leverage global appeal, due to many factor, location being the biggest challenge they face. There are far too many clubs that are miles ahead of them in the PL, which will take time, money and huge investment just to get that bit closer
Don't know about that, young kids will start supporting a team that does well and has "cool" players regardless of where they're based. E.g. Newcastle won a lot of fans in Scandinavia that were kids and teenagers between 1993 and basically until Shearer retired.

Yes but look at city their fan base was and is mainly in and around Manchester, but money and success has widened their appeal.

Newcastle were incredibly popular when they were good before.

the thing is with a heavy investment they will get full house crowds of 52k like the Shearer days. apparently UEFA are going to relax FFP for 2 seasons which with a 52k crowd, they could spend a great deal even staying in the FFP rules. if it's true about the 2 year relaxation they could build the foundations just like City and Chelsea did and still spend a fair bit every season after. if they buy top players, it's a guarantee that the fans up there will even accept price increases to watch their team play.

Disagree completely. History has shown that people, especially the international fans/kids, will jump on the bandwagon with any successful team. The points you've made about Newcastle are equally valid for Chelsea pre-Abramovic and City before their various takeovers. Neither of those clubs had particularly large domestic support outside of their traditional areas, let alone in Asia, America, Africa etc and now both of them are among the biggest "brands" in the sport with fans or people buying their merch etc. all over the world.

Don't think this one will run very far
Politics and football blah blah; not the fans' job to make the moral decisions blah blah.

''Hatice Cengiz, the fiancée of the murdered journalist Jamal Khashoggi, has implored Newcastle United supporters
to mobilise against the prospective Saudi Arabia-funded takeover of the club''

If they came for Spurs or any other such morally repugnant outfit
I would cease and desist my support immediately

https://www.theguardian.com/footbal...ancee-urges-newcastle-fans-to-oppose-takeover

Do I explain everything in terms of politics? Pretty much except on matchdays.

Just a glimpse
In 2019 Saudi authorities executed 184 people, up 23% from the year before, with a plurality of the killings in punishment for drug-related offenses. The majority of those who were killed — all via beheading — were foreign nationals. Some in public, some women and some by crucifixion.

Why do they want to buy Newcastle?.Sportswashing their reputation.

Disagree completely. City with all their cash can't fill their stadium week in week out. With over 10 years of oil ownership. they are still only the second biggest club in a provincial city in the north of england.

Filling stadia is only a fraction of how to measure fandom now, sadly.

So one of my friends who is a Geordie fan says the takeover has been completed, nothing officially announced yet as Premier League prioritising Project Restart

Sorry mate but you're not making any sense. You've just completely changed your argument. Your original point was about how Newcastle are not well supported outside of their local area so they would never become a big global club. What has attendances got to do with that? Nothing. And even if it did, you're acting like City not selling out every week is a big deal. Firstly none of the clubs sell out every week and secondly it's not like they have swathes of empty seats. They're apparently got the 5th highest average attendance in the league (I just checked) so not sure how you can use that as the basis for any kind of point you're trying to make

Yes you're right they are the second biggest club in Manchester. But FFS when the other team is probably the biggest club in any sport on the planet, that's not really much of a point either.

Probably wanting to avoid a crowd gathering near the ground at the moment too.

I live up here so I'm pleased for the town albeit with huge reservations about the ownership itself. Ashley created such a feeling of negativity and pessimism that I'm pleased at least to see the back of him.

From a club rival point of view, it makes it harder for us but I feel that once things are back to 'normal', we will be able to compete more and more within the top 6 as the seasons go on.

WTF!?!? It’s 2020 isn’t it?

It’s definitely sportswashing, it’s the most glaring example of it to date. Why else would they want a PL club. It’s not to make money.

I don't think they give a fuck about their reputation and I think they know it can't be washed clean. IMO, a big football club today is what a 'Super Yacht' was 20 years ago - i.e. the ultimate rich man's toy. They just want to get into a dick waving contest with Mansoor.

Good point. Bit of geopolitical dick waving.
