I thought Paulinho played pretty well last night, Dembele too and Sandro. They all put in good shifts. This was as much about game time and fitness as anything else. They all have work to do to get into the starting XI for Prem matches at this point because they are a little behind the others in terms of fitness and sharpness but based on last night it looks like all of them are up for the challenge and will be at least trying to win over Poch. What more can we ask for?!

I think the problem is if you are going to play him in the front 3 then who is he better than in that position. Eriksen? Obviously not. Lamela? Don't make me laugh. Chadli? I suppose a case could be made but i'd favour Chadli myself. Let's not forget that he is a £17M Brazilian international. That's a lot of money for a club like ours to pay for someone who may be a slight improvement over Chadli. And that of course assuming we don't bring in Jay Rod or Wellbeck or Depay or any of a host of AM we've been linked with.

In all the time he's been at the club i've seen Paulinho play well in about 3 halves of football. If we can get back 80% of what we paid for him I reckon Levy will take that with Poch's blessing.

I do agree with that sentiment but there will be a lot of games this year and Eriksen, Chadli and Lamela won't be fit for all of them. If someone better can come in and replace him then I'm not that attached and he can move on. If not why force him out when he can fill in or replace those players due to form and fitness?

I think one thing is certain and that is that he is not suited to the CM roles in the new system. He also has a very good stats record compared with Eriksen who people rightly acknowledge as making a good impact last season.

What!? He's looking back to his best again. The guy is immense! Even noticed a couple of quick, forward passes from him last night!

Agree he looked good last night. I can't see that we need to sell any box to box players. If you look at it we are set up well with strength in depth

Capoue - Sandro
Bentaleb - Dembele

Chadli - Townsend/Kane
Lamela - Paulinho
Eriksen - Holtby/Kane

Ade - Soldado

Following last season i could also see Dembele playing in that front three from the left or the right.

Chadli was getting a slating last season and before the game last week but now he has had a chance to show us what he can do people are beginning to appreciate him. And I think the same will go for Paulinho, he may not so far demonstrated that he the quickest, the best passer, the most physical or the hardest working, but he has something none of the other CMs offer and that is goals. He has that natural instinct to be in the right place at the right time and he is a goal scorer. Now all of his deficiencies could certainly improve and he would could have a very good goal scoring midfielder. Were going to need al the goals we can get this season. So I would think it would be a little too soon too sell him before he has had a full season under Poch.

I'm in the minority on here in that I actually rate Andros but there's no denying that, nicely taken penalty aside, he was our poorest player last night. Not as awful as he was in the away leg admittedly but it was a not a good performance. I think he's trying too hard to impress and failing. He needs to take a page out of Kane's book and start using his brain.

I feel the same on that front. Its disappointing when he puts in a performance like that. He gave a really mature press performance at the end saying he is at least a month away from fitness and that needs to be considered. Lennon was better last night, but I still feel townsend offers more in the future. Main thing is coaching the team play and concept of passing the ball round a player rather than just trying to run around them.

Paulinho must have impressed Poch last night but probably not enough to be in the team for Liverpool...

Paulinho reminds me slightly of Frank Lampard.
Not bad, but flatters to deceive and just about chimes in with enough goals with the right players around him.

I'm afraid whilst he improved during the game with AEL he has looked average for quite a while, both for us and Brazil. I had hoped for far better.

And as for last night... It was AEL, from Cyprus!!

I think he just needs to get fit. He was great before his injury last year under TS and I have confidence he will return to greatness in the coming weeks.
I don't think he was bad last night. He had 2 wild shots but he was good otherwise.

I think calling him the Brazilian Frank Lampard has been a fairly accurate description of him so far. He's not incredibly good at one skill or another although he doesn't have any huge glaring weaknesses either. He seems vanilla average except for the fact that he constantly pops up for goals.

Some fair points in there. He did win the ball but also lost it quite a lot too. Also I liked his goal but I wouldn't give him too much praise for the assist. Obviously it's not a bad thing or anything but it wasn't a tough pass to make. I just generally feel underwhelmed by his play and he would be the first CM I'd sell to accommodate MS
This is brilliant, you've just contradicted exactly what you said previously about him. You've made your mind up about paulinho already just like I've made my mind up about you. Let's call it a draw! Enjoy the season.

Hmmm. Give my opinion, get grief. Concede I was a little harsh, get grief for being contradictory. Something tells me I can't win

Think the tweets he just sent (although pretty generic) mean he's definitely not going anywhere. Wouldn't make any sense to tweet that, and reply to an official tweet about his goal with #COYS (lol) and then be leaving in next few days. Hopefully Poch has told him he's very much part of his plans. If so I'm delighted.

Don't want to give you a like or agree as will seem like telling you you can't win lol. I disagreed with you last night but doesn't mean not allowed an opinion, it's a forum. I'm sure you ain't some dickhead that would refuse to asknowledge if someone is doing better. I really, really don't rate Townsend and hope I'm proven wrong, I'm sure you're same regarding Paulinho.

Exactly. I'm starting to think Paulinho has a couple of accounts on here the way people are talking about him. I don't think he's bad but he does disappoint me. That said, he does score goals and was restricted in AVB's system, as well as the fact he was injured and suspended for part of last season and he hasn't stopped for around 2 years! I like to think I can see both sides of the argument but apparently that's contradictory or going back on your word. I sincerely hope Paulinho proves me wrong and I hope he continues to score goals!

Is Pauli injured, knackered, going backwards or just not very good? I see he did not make the Brazil squad for the friendly this week. Maybe he is just suffering from something......*

*Cue the obvious jokes I guess - I set 'em up, you knock 'em down.
