Dier wears 15 because Vidic was his favourite player growing up. He could have changed to 6 years ago (before Dav joined) and never did. He’ll be 15 for his whole career here, same with Dele and 20.

I’m really buzzing with this signing, it addresses so many glaring needs not just in terms of needing a DM, but from his interview today he comes across as a serious but likeable guy, intelligent and articulate, who you can tell is going to be a leader in the dressing room from day one.

As far as Jose’s desire to be a bunch of ****s on the pitch goes, I imagine Højbjerg can fit into that role perfectly. The fact he won major trophies at such a young age with Bayern must surely give him an edge we lack in our squad.

For me we haven’t had a proper leader in the centre of our midfield since Scott Parker. We’ve had some quality players there in Wanyama and Dembele, but they don’t fit that “potential captain” mould as Parker always did and as Højbjerg already seems to.

If he comes good, PEH with GLC and Ndombele in front of him could be an epic midfield trio.

I don't like it when the show stills of the game instead of pausing video, as you can't see the context of the situation. Also, Dier's stats in the comparison are a for both DM and CB, so will be skewed.

Yes, I tend to think that the uploader maybe afraid of the copyright thing.

That to me is the exciting bit of this signing. Having a disciplined CDM to help GLC and especially Ndombele ( I pray he doesn't leave) express themselves on the field will definitely transform our midfield.

The original standard formation had:

11-10-9-8-7

---6--5--4---

----3---2----

------1------

1 - Goalkeeper
2 & 3 - Full backs
4, 5 & 6 - Half backs
7 & 11 - Wingers
8 & 10 - Inside forwards
9 - Centre forward

When translated into modern formations, you can make the argument for any two of the half back numbers to be the CB numbers, so 5 works for the DM. On the other hand, it's much more usual to have 4 or 6 as the DM, allowing the CB's to have consecutive numbers. But then there's a nice symmetry to the DM having 5. Argh!
I agree with this but in the next decade or so this was modified as formations transitioned towards 442 and 433. So 2 remained rb, and 3 left (say Kinnear, Knowles). 5 and 6 were the cbs or cb and sweeper (say England and Beal). 4 and 10 were the midfielders (Mullery and Venables); 7 and 11 were rw and lw respectively; with 8 generally inside forward (Greaves) and 9 the centre forward. So, for people of my generation, 5 has very definitely been the cb. Like others, I am really surprised that it wasn’t offered and taken by Dier. It’ll always look odd to me.

It feels great to be signing players again and in this instance a player with prem experience and excellent stats.

Judging from his interview it seems that he sees his job as controlling the midfield.He doesn’t see himself as being a star or anything but just being the organiser,the cog that makes the machine run.
Always thought this kind of player was important, a role that is not just being a ball winner.
I remember back in 1961 my father pointing out this type of role and one player especially. It just happened that the player he was on about could do just about everything expected and more from someone in that role.It was the great Danny Blanchflower.
