Anyone else think Rose was really quite poor yesterday?

Defensively he was all over the place and he failed to track McGinn for their goal and then sold himself completely with the block.

Going forward his delivery was typically poor too.

The last 18 months I just think defensively he has regressed. He’s never been a great defender really has he?

on Mcgiven goal it was'nt his job to track him as it was Toby who was in no man's land so Danny had to race back to cover Toby's ass.

I thought Rose played well. He is tough and tackles tough. Sure he is half a step slower but for me he does bring some stability. I would keep him. I don't blame im for their goal either.

Slightly more complicated than that. They were clearly shifted towards the ball side so Alderweireld should have been on Wesley Sanchez should have been free and Rose a little narrower. It’s a bit of a mistake for all of them. Not sure why it happened like that but they clearly cleaned it up in the second half.

I agree that he was rather poor defensively. If he had stayed on his feet he also might have stopped their goal.

I thought he looked a bit rusty at times, but that's not particularly surprising as it was the first game of the season and he missed the pre-season tour. I know he was training, but it's not the same as playing games.

I might be doing McGinn a disservice, but I thought he got a bit lucky with the goal as well. He seemed to miscontrol the ball slightly which caused him to slow down and when Danny put the brakes on he slipped. If McGinn had put the ball where he wanted to Rose would've had a good chance to block it.

How did people think he did v City?

I know all the players struggled, but Rose was rancid. He looked like he'd never seen a football before. I think he gave the ball away about 5 times in the opening 20 minutes which continually invited pressure on to us.

I'm looking forward to Sess and Davies getting fit if this is going to be how Rose continues.

Honestly the way we started I’d be more surprised if there was a player who didn’t do this

The defensive 4 did about as well as could be expected when facing an endless barrage with little to no defensive cover provided by the midfielders.

I thought his starting position was a little too flat on occasion. He gave his man an easier time in recovering when we got around their first pressing line.

Thought it was an improvement on his Villa performance of I’m being honest. That one was a bit rough for him.

He did needlessly give the ball away a few times but to be honest, whether he made those passes or not would have had no effect on the pressure that was generally on us IMO, the pattern of the game would not have changed. This was actually probably a pretty horrible game for the back 4, not only were they under constant pressure, there wasn't much on for them at all when in possession. I don't think I've ever seen us struggle to even play out of our defence for so much of a game and I don't think that was just down to personal, it was also City's pressure and probably our positioning too.

Of course we haven't seen Sessegnon yet, but as of now I still think Rose is a solid choice at LB. Even after these two performances, I would still personally have him over Davies, but it's nice to have options.

He had bugger all cover on the left. Pep saw that early and decided to target Rose. Unsurprising he got rinsed, like our midfield, in the first half.

Rose is ok when he faces a wide player who hugs the line, mobile players that cut in lose him too easily. He backed away from the crosser for the first goal, and was out of position for the second. Davies is a much better, more adaptable defender. Winks hardly made a tackle or an interception, for the second week running we improved when he departed. Probably has a lot to do with him playing at the base of the diamond, Dier should probably play there.

Interested to see how Rose reacts when Sessegnon is fit, he needs to buck his ideas up as he hasn't started the season well at all.

Always loved Rose. Even when he made those silly comments that summer I supported him. Great player some years ago. One of the best in the world at LB. Now I find myself hoping Davies plays. He just looks finished.

Obviously it can change again. He was good in the CL final so it is not like he is that far away from being a good LB, but quite disappointed by the way he looks. He suddenly looks old.

We could very well end up in a situation where Davies is the better defensive option and Sessegnon provides more going forward.

Really hope he proves me wrong. He is not that old and considering he established himself quite late he hasn't got that many games in his legs either.
