Imho he is physically tough and quite dirty a player but he doesn’t have the intelligence to be a great Cb and doesn’t seem to be improving his decision making.

I hope he does improve, I really do but he’s certainly no Ledley King.

We should have bought de ligt at the time instead.

Think we will have to suffer in the short term with Sanchez if we want him to develop, I'd like to see if he can build on a consistent run of games but the problem is we have two absolute quality players at CB already. So we either drop one of them now and develop him or have a half baked Sanchez when they fuck off. So short term we might need to accept better players being on the bench as we try and see if Sanchez can fulfil the potential that Poch see's in him. Personally I can see the potential in Foyth a lot more even though he has significantly more reckless moments in him than Sanchez.

A central defender may favour one side but a really good one can play both.
Toby's not been much cop when he's played LCB and I'd hate too see Jan RCB...

I think he is better RCB but will learn from Jan and Toby to play both better, he has attributes they don't and their calmness will no doubt rub off on him.

Oh and that tackle you see every week at Goals into wooden fences... If he doesn't go into the hoardings nobody would have an issue with it.

He is reasonably speedy for a central defender but he consistently, IMO, fails to use his strength when it is needed. I can't see he has really progressed since he arrived.

He's not as strong as he thinks, he needs to learn how to use his body better.

At the start of games, you can tell that he's surprised by how strong his opponent is. In the next battle he overcompensates by going in extra strong. Sometimes he gets away with it, other times it's a foul.

I hope he'll come good and improve on his first season but IMO Foyth is better than him in every critical aspect and given similar minutes will improve at a rapid rate.

I think people have been way too harsh on certain players Sanchez being one of them...I think next season when/if Alderweirld goes he’ll step up big time as a right sides CB he’s young and I think it’s dumb people are seriously expect zero drop in performance when he’s on his weaker side

Something has to be said as to how Sanchez hasn’t played behind a good midfield defensively since 17/18, coincidentally his best season so far.

What about Van Dyke?
For another 30 Mil look what we could (maybe) have got. I know it's silly but it's also relative.
30 Mil and we have to build a fortress around our man.
I really thought he might have become Ledley after the first few games.

He hasn't really improved much since 17/18, perhaps he's even regressed, but he's still only 23. When Vertonghen was 23, he was in his penultimate season at Ajax, and Alderweireld was playing his final season there (and so much happened in his career between then and him being truly world-class). Plenty of time for Sanchez to become an incredible CB. As others have said, the instability in our midfield would not have helped.

He has all the attributes other than calmness which will come with experience. It is why generally you need experienced CBs if you want to have consistency and win anything. A pairing of Foyth and Sanchez at CB would be disastrous until they both have a lot more games under their belts. Your CBs ideally should be 28+ if you are looking to win things consistently. It's why we needed to renew Jan and Toby for two more years.

Regressing and 'still only 23' don't go hand in hand

Looking at him body tackle Neymar last week. Such a silly thing to be doing at a friendly. No need for force when Neymar is down the line. a quick tap would suffice

A while ago I was thinking about Sanchez and I never hear him in interviews. His English is much better than I was expecting!

By all accounts de Ligt is having a nightmare in Italy at the moment. The Dutch league and the other leagues are totally different levels. I can't see De Jong doing much at Barcelona either.

I could start naming a few players but do you really believe no one can switch. Alderweireld has had to do it.

I know people have had to do it but you've said a really good CB can play both sides, so I'm just interested in the names you bring up. I think if Alderweireld was just as good on the left as he was on the right surely he would've been playing there in Jan's abscense?

They both need time. They'll be fine but yes de Ligt is having a rough go at it to start off. Sanchez was great his first season with us getting regular game time alongside Jan. He'll also be fine.

De Ligt wasn't ready for a big move and he wouldn't have got the required game time he needed to mature, Sanchez was pretty much straight in to cover Toby as he was injured, not sure De Ligt would have been on that level in that season.

I haven't followed anything about Juve or de Ligt but couldn't problems be linked to Chiellini getting injured?
