Who's Steve Peters?

EDIT: That sounds like the second-album title for a 70s prog-rock band. "Who's Steve Peters? Out now on vinyl!"
Sports Psychiatrist, knocked some brains in British cycling
From his Wikipedia page
In 2001 a former student at Sheffield recommended Peters to the British Cycling team, and he moved from part-time to full-time work with the team in 2005.[5] Peters has been recognised by Olympic cyclists Sir Chris Hoy and Victoria Pendleton, as having helped them in their careers.[6] Sir Dave Brailsford has described Peters as "the best appointment I've ever made."[7] Peters stepped down from his role with British Cycling in April 2014 when Brailsford left his position as Performance Director.[8]

Peters has worked with Ronnie O'Sullivan since 2011 working with him when he won his 4th and 5th World Snooker Championships in 2012 and 2013.[9] O'Sullivan has acknowledged Peters' influence and help in his continued success.[10]

After the 2012 Olympics Peters was appointed by UK Athletics to work with the country's high performance athletes.[11] Sprinter Adam Gemili, who won gold at the 2014 European Athletics Championships in the 200 metres and silver at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in the 100 metres, attributed his ability to perform under pressure at major championships to his work with Peters.[12]

In November 2012 Peters started to work with Liverpool F.C.[13] In March 2014 he was recruited to help the England football team.[14]

I don't think it's as simple as those people saying Dele is past his peak, but it's clear he is done playing at this level. His ego means he clearly won't put in the work to change his playing style to be able to operate from CM. He was able to perform there at times early in his career because of his hunger and incredible pressing energy, which he's just given up on now. Such a shame because at his best with us he was an unplayable combination of pressing, drive and movement. What a waste of all that talent.

What he now needs a system built around his playing style as a second striker/late runner who has the luxury to be the attacker who stays up and doesn't join in the defence. He could do a great job for a team like West Ham playing up alongside Antonio, or Southampton alongside Ings. But he'll never play for a top team again imo.

I think maybe not having fans is also hindering Dele when opposition fans boo'd him etc he used to feed off it and I think he fed off our fans singing his name so maybe he's lost the adrenaline rush of having fans in the stadium which has made his form even worse.

I think if he was coming off the bench to a rousing sing of we've got Alli! We may see a different Dele.

But something is clearly not right mentally with him something has got a grip of him you do not go from being one of the worlds best young talents to this in such a short space of time he was an arrogant little bastard now he is a lost boy.

It seems like a chain of events with him and I really do think its the club responsibility to help him here.

1) His mother hitting the press with loads of shit about him
2) Then his dad hitting the press as well
3) He had a cheating issue with his girlfriend Ruby Mae they split then got back together
4) Hamstring Injury
5) He got burgled an help at knife point etc.
6) The Dier bromance has seemed to fade away and its rare to see Dele smiling these days.
7) He probably feels a little bullied by Jose - but its strange as he was the main man in Jose's early days

It all makes me think are we seeing a player struggling with his mental health, there is rumours swirling about him not being able to sleep etc as well its all a bit worrying.

I think us as fans also owe him some loyalty where we can try and gee him up although I think he is done here I want what's best for the kid as he really is a great guy.
I, like you, have been looking for reasons as to why he's not performing. Thing is it wasn't just performance yesterday. Sloppy passing is one thing, failure to even attempt to win the ball back, or get into a position to defend your mistake is inexcusable. This happened numerous times yesterday, and is certainly not the actions of a player trying to get back into the side.

If he doesn't want to play Jose's game he needs to go in January whilst he's still worth something.

Whether or not he's playing in his best position is irrelevant to the amount of effort he showed yesterday. No excuses for half arsed tracking back and sloppy 10 yard passing.

Fascinating to ponder on who exactly would take him (that he would accept) on his wages . Surely the lower prem- bustle sides
will shy away from his energy levels . Overseas I suppose.

You don't need to be able to dictate the game to be able to pull off a simple pass and not dwell on the ball.

His display yesterday was similar to Ndombele against Burnley last season. The difference is he has been here long enough to at least work hard for the team. Time for Levy to give him the motivational speech :cautious:

I still think he'll get one more chance. One thing I will say is that the front 4 yesterday look to be at early pre-season level. They haven't played much and they're not used too playing as a unit. They need to play together more if there's any hope in finding form. It would not surprise me to see them start in the Europa again (although Bale probably in the first team and Moura in Europe). At least there is a game a week in Europe to build chemistry with the Europa team. I suspect Alli will drop to the bench in favour of Lamela though. At least you know he will work hard even if he's wasteful on the ball.

Totally agreement with you and it makes me sad. I really want him to turn things around but after yesterday he's not going to get many more chances.

Totally speculative obviously but I suspect he'll be sold to wherever Poch rocks up. At the moment I genuinely doubt whether any club would pay anything approaching what Levy will think the player is worth. Poch is likely to wind up at a club with money to burn at some point and will think he can get the best out of him again. In the interim I wouldn't be shocked to see him go on loan.

True but he needs a run of games all the talk before the season was how ali was looking good in training from dier and mou then he plays the first half vs everton which he was one of the better players and was hooked off at ht and hasnt started a epl gane since just doesnt add up

No he doesn't that's nonsense, we're talking about basic passes and moving the ball on at the right time, and at the very least making an effort on the pitch.

This is nothing to do with needing a run of games, it's just pure and utter rank shitness
