By sheer and mere contrast, Thiago is quintessentially the kind of cm we want and need. Him and Kimmich bossed the middle today, especially with a soft #10 in Eriksen (as opposed to a mobile and dangerous #10 in Coutinho who Dier and Sissoko had to deal with).

Like someone said above, Dier will never be a Thiago. But a Thiago is what we need, and glaringly lacking. Wins his duels, tracks players and cuts out passing lanes, anticipating and intercepting, winning possession back and then playing it wide or to the #10 ahead. Metronome.

Said it for a long time. Too slow and not good enough technically.
I vaguely remember dier mentioning that he was one of the fastest in the squad over a certain distance (can't remember what) If that's true then the illness and injuries have for sure taken its toll.

Not sure if I can post this here, someone let me know if not and I will remove it.

We‘ve seen this before and it’s a pointless stat. At full speed over a long distance he might have been , but anyone with eyes could see he wasn’t the quickest player where it counted in a football match.

Obviously the injuries/illnesses have made him sadly even less mobile.

Straight line speed is one measurement. May have been fast then, but he isn't now. Even then, his lateral speed wasn't great. As the scouts in the NFL say, his 'quick twitch' movement is slow. And I'm sorry, but a first-rate PL midfielder has to have the ability to be highly mobile, agile, and quick. They also need to be calm. Dier has zero of these traits right now.

It's quite sad to watch Eric ATM. And the saddest bit is he looks like he knows it's beyond him :(

I think Jose is holding out hope that some sharpness/mobility will emerge with game time but that is looking less and less likely with every game.

Oh yea I wasn't disagreeing mate it's very clear he isn't.

yeah I know you weren’t, it’s just that another poster a while ago ( can’t remember who) used this bogus article to argue that Dier was actually quick and it just set me off :D

People expect Dier to be charging around closing down the ball and winning it all over midfield when that's not his game. Yes, Kante and Ndidi might do that but Diet is more of an anchor. He will sit and take up a position in front of the front players to block passing channels. It's not necessary for him to be hi-octane charging around.

Carrick did the same very effectively as did Pirlo. Only difference is the gulf in passing ability.

Yes, he didn't play great but he should be criticised for performance not style
It might not be a requirement for him to be high octane but he is ponderous on and off the ball. He can't handle the opposition press and he is not aware enough of options around him in tight situations to beat the press or make a pass. He looked like he wanted to be subbed and lost the ball on countless occasions or put us under pressure needlessly.

Skipp showed more energy in his cameo than Dier has this season. Dier needs to be dropped and moved on in the summer.

The number of times he should have made the spare man to receive the ball in our half and then stepped into positions so he wasn't able to was shocking at this level.

So you say it's not a requirement for Dier then use it as a stick to beat him with.

I agree Dier was not dealing with the press very well and that was his fault but given how poor Eriksen was at providing options, retaining the ball and being the 8.5 that JM likes in giving defensive support Dier and Sissoko really had a job on their hands.

I'm not saying Dier played great but he was by far not the weak link today. Skipp and Sissoko would have been completely overrun and left so many gaps it would have been a cricket score

When you watch Bayern you see what we need to strive for.

Dier and Sissoko just not at that level.
Couldn’t be more spot on 1,000%.

I was at the game tonight and it kind of reminded me of when we went away to Dortmund in the europa league early poch days and played mason and bentaleb I think it was CM and got ABSOLOUTELY torn a new one and that is when it was very clear how far off where we needed to be the players we had were. Then we upgraded to prime wanyama and dembele and while they’re not as mobile as the Bayern 3 today, in their prime big vic and mousa D the GOAT would’ve given these Bayern 3 today a run for their money, or at least they’d have know they were in a game at least, dier and sissoko are proper pony, as is winks, well mabye not pony but they’re mid table prem league players at best trying to boss a midfield against 3 of the best midfielders in Europe, they got schooled.

He’s awful. Anyone thinking he will ever he good enough for us are deluded.

Jenas said it right, he will never be good enough to play that position for Spurs.

I had to quote you for the utter drivel. Comparing Dier to Carrick and Pirlo? Look mate, the only difference between them isn’t passing ability ffs ??? What on Earth are you watching?

Dier is a pub player in comparison.

Burnley is basically his level. Hence why he looked better Sunday.

Mourinho needs to replace Dier via the transfer window urgently. Our CM is so so woeful.Sissoko and Dier both not good enough but Dier is another level of terrible.

Did Jose once wanted to buy him for 80 million pounds?
