Sounds like he's put some really unfortunate injuries/illness behind him. If he now concentrates on being exclusively a CB, I'm confident eric is going to come back and be a monster for us for years.

Your message seems to have so much more gravitas written in bold. You make me feel more confident in Eric too!

I’ll be totally honest, I’m really hopeful that Dier is going to be a top centre back for years to come and I’m totally behind the positional switch, but I’m wondering where all the confidence on here is coming from.

Good question. I guess it comes from remembering how he once did as a RB? I don't know! I think it's more hope than fact. He should have made this transition two years ago. Hopefully he can get up to a solid level quickly. It potentially saves us the headache of needing to sign another CB this transfer window, as he would effectively replacing Jan. Leaving us with Toby, Dav, Dier and Japhet as our CB options for next season. But i think much will depend on the next nine games. I think Jose will give him most of those games to get a really close look at him in that position and in turn, it'll determine what he decides to do with that position during the upcoming transfer window.

If our centre-backs were to race over half the length of the pitch, how would they finish? I’m guessing...

1. Davinson
2. Tanganga
3. Foyth
4. Dier
5. Jan
6. Toby

... which is why, for all Toby & Jan’s experience, I’m not sure I want to see CB pairings without Davinson or Japhet anymore.

I'm optimistic based on:
- him finally seeming to overcome injury/illness
- an apparent desire to now be a CB, rather than a CM (I agree with Poch, who said in his book he'd be a better CB than CM, I've always thought he was a defender, despite him putting in some decent CM performances earlier on)
- his performances immediately prior to lockdown playing at CB. Though we were really bad generally for me he was one of our best players and seemed to growing in confidence.

Regarding pace I always thought he was pretty quick over a distance. I agree we need pace at the back, based on our current squad I would like to see him with Sanchez at CB, and Tanganga at RB.

After a long spell of really poor form and fitness I thought there were some very positive signs of the old Eric Dier in the last couple of games. Hopefully it's a sign of things to come. There was also talk of a new contract which I'd take as a sign of confidence in him. Would be so happy to have him back at his best.

i thought he was awful against RB Leipzig. It’s wishful thinking to think he’s going to be good enough at CB, I haven’t seen any evidence to back it up. Personally hope we move him on, the thought of him partnered with Sanchez or Tanganga coupled with our full back options is pretty scary.

I still don't think he was fully over his injury problems from last year. Hopefully th break will have done him good.

On a different note, it is absolutely ridiculous that he is going into the rest of the season with this FA charge hanging over him. It will affect him mentally without doubt as it seems there is no time frame for it to be decided.

I seem to recall that Dier was rated the fastest player at Tottenham over 100m.

I have no idea why we are f*cking about with a new contract for Dier - feels like a big mistake. He'll be down to last year of contract so just sell. Our backline is shocking and I think someone like Zouma is just what's needed. We may even need to bring in a replacement for Vertonghen or Foyth too - wishful thinking?
To retain some value in him. You want new signings then we need to sell our players at max value not knockdown prices.

Zouma? Fuckinghell hes shit mate.

Dier can be quality if he dedicates himself to CB.

If like you want, we let Dier go and needed a replacement for foyth/Vertonghen we would need to sign probably 3 CBs which in this climate will not happen, if Dier has one year in the contract left we can’t just let him go for free with his potential price.
I also don’t think he’s a bad squad option to have around

If Dier settles in at CB and continues his form pre covid then we don't need a CB do we. Davinson + Toby/Dier against most teams, parking the bus we could use Toby and Dier or all three. with Tanaganga, Davies and maybe even Jan (with a one year extension) as back up.

If we sign Hoijberg (sp?) there is no real need to get a CB as well.

All that experience means that they don't have to run as fast. Plus Toby is a warrior.

Jose loves Eric, I would be very surprised if we didn't offer him a good deal, regardless of his drop off in form before all this bollocks.
