Seeing as people are taking stuff literally, this was much worse than Cantona, because he went further into the crowd. And he's fucking lucky nobody saw the evils he was giving the guy. Much worse than a kung po kick.

I think he should have been banned from playing professional football ever again. And banned from having a brother. If I were at the FA i'd have thrown in cousins too.

The PL or FA can't take action against a player for misdemeanours that occur outside of a football setting. It's the club as their employer that has to suspend or fire them if they see fit to do so, which of course will almost never happen except for if they're given actual prison sentences.
They can and do take action. It's the infamous "Bringing the Game into Disrepute" clause.

A Spurs fan got one of our 4 CB's suspended for 4 out of the last 5 games of the season.

Even if he had gotten away with no ban, there are no words that could adequately describe how big a pillock that "fan" is.

Disagree - Dier got himself banned by losing control and going into the stands to physically confront someone (which is exactly what he was doing!). It was an incredibly stupid thing to do. Imagine if the 'fan' had come to meet Dier and shoved him? What would then have happened? He got himself into a lose-lose situation that could easily have turned violent. If Dier had raised his hands he'd be looking at a 9 month ban and a criminal charge for affray at the least. I'd only blame the fan more if he ran onto the pitch to dish the abuse out in the first place.

A 4 game ban was quite lenient.

Dier's brother should have noted the guy's seat number and made a complaint through Eric. The fan would likely have been banned from the stadium. Every seat is recorded by cameras these days.

Although the bloke is probably a twat unless it was real abusive stuff(which it could of been but seems like it was more criticism)I blame his brother quite honestly. If you can’t handle that kind of stuff don’t sit with the punters. Im sure that wasn't the first football game he’s been too.

They never made contact mate. There was a bit of pushing after Dier was surrounded and had people grabbing and holding him back, ironically that probably made the situation worse.

I disagree. Players can't do that, irrespective of what is said. Only possible reason is for Health and Safety.
Imagine giving him a slap on the wrist, that wouldn't discourage anyone, and certainly sends the wrong message to fans who decide to invade the pitch
Agreed. They had to punish him. Im more triggered over the clear double standard and selective punishment by the FA. Not to mention the absurd amount of time taken to actually hand the punishment.

Oh so its the fans fault the FA took 4 fucking months? If the FA took the action immediately, he’d have missed United, West Ham and Sheffield. Possibly Bournemouth if the ban was handed before Burnley.

I see people still haven't taken the time to learn the great art of reading yet.

There's an interesting take on the case from Henry Winter in today's Times...

Dier commented "I understand that he (the abusive fan) acknowledged and accepted responsibility for the incident in his police interview and regrets the abuse, which is why I have formally requested a copy and for it to be used in my evidence.”
For some reason, the police did not release the statement to the FA, leading to a Right of Access Request causing the long delay, and it still did not arrive so all parties agreed to proceed without it.

It seems bizarre that the Metropolitan Police should have delayed releasing clear evidence of mitigation, forcing the FA to resort to the law to force its release, and then, when the police had still not complied, Eric's hearing went ahead anyway. If it had been a proper court, rather than the FA's kangaroo version, and a key defence document had been witheld, any judge would have dismissed the case there and then.

two things can be true at the same time

1 the "fan" involved is a pillock

2 the FA are hopeless & useless for the length of time it took them to reach a verdict and for the verdict itself.

i was commenting on the former not the latter

I was upset by the timing until I realised Dier was delaying it to gather info
