He really did have some commanding headers out of our box and looked good 1:1 a lot on Sunday. Unfortunately when it matters most he was just caught out. The issue with Dier is that he’s about an 80% defender (defends well about 80% of the time) when top players are closer to 90-95%. I think it’s lapses in concentration and formative years not spent solidifying those defensive instincts.

This post really highlights the fundamental lack of understanding that most fans have. That first sentence is accurate. The second sentence is just nonsense. Each incident matters equally. If he fucks up then it may lead to a goal. "When it matters most" actually shows that it is nothing more than confirmation bias.

With top quality attacking wing backs in the squad I'm wondering whether Dier could play at DM again, at the base of a three man midfield.

He saved us 14 goals on Sunday and only cost us 1

IMO he was most effective for us playing the DM/CB hybrid role allowing us to switch formations whether in or out of possession. Unfortunately, I don't think he'd get a look in now in CM since his form there went down the pan. I think he's best now in a back 3 which could enable us to get Doherty and Reguilon up and down the flanks.

He don't have the mobility and youthful legs he used to have,
doesn't want to play in midfield himself as he's felt how outplayed he were.

1 good game in 10 he may win most of the heading duels but he is not good enough to start for a team that should be challenging for the top four. Poor concentration and no pace.

Diers performance again today , well in a nutshell hoping n praying his potential from a few years ago would finally kick in, except we saw a below average performance again mixed with lapses, oopsies and many misplaced long balls moments...

You can see how Mourinho would like the idea of Dier (and Dele), seen from the outside both of them seem to have the fire and 'big balls' he talks about, but... unlike other 'winners' he's worked with, they are both really struggling to put their money where their mouth is and be consistent.

Some disappointing lapses in judgement and concentration today.

No idea why Mourinho persists with him, how can you pick Dier over Toby?

A lot of games coming up and not a lot of options. I'm more concerned about Sanchez who has some of the worst heading ability I've ever seen for a top flight centre back combined with terrible positional sense. We desperately need to strengthen the back line with a new pacey centre half.

Let’s face it, the guy is bang average. But inevitably he’ll have a decent game in a few weeks and people will come harking back saying he’s gonna turn into a WC defender and captain England.

It appears as if I completely made up a word in “harking”. Tbf it made sense in my head.

Surely I’d this was in the “What Opponent Fans Are Saying About Us” thread I’d have been absolutely roasted ?

That's the problem, not one of our CB's is good enough for a team that should be challanging for the top four.

I think like a few players Dier needs games to get up to speed. I’ll judge him more in 3/4 games times. Hard to judge anyone atm.

We shouldn’t be conceding goals like Ings first one. That ball should be dealt with by either Dier or Sanchez. Until Dier learns to focus for the whole game he will never be a quality CB, he is not a youngster anymore and going to sleep a couple of times a game is just not good enough.

Have no confidence in him as a CB (not a fan of him as a DM either to be honest). His reading and anticipation of what's in front of him is not great and has a knack of switching off a couple of times during a game. Never feel he is particularly composed when the opposition ramp up the pressure and it's almost as though his brain becomes scrambled in that situation.

Yes, can get his head onto a lot stuff coming into the box and ping the odd decent ball but he has a basic skill set for a CB. Against the top sides in the league, he'll get seriously shown up a lot of the time imo.

I just don't see a quality CB there and don't see any signs he'll develop into one considering he will be turning 27 soon. Don't think playing as a DM for so long in his development years has done him any favours but for me he a squad player who can dome in and fill in here and there.

I think it’s because Dier is a fighter and Jose feels he is a leader and he has concerns we’re too nice.

He needs a pacy centre back alongside him and to be honest he doesn’t inspire me.

No way would I have him at defensive midfield anymore either, he doesn’t have the mobility.

Once we're up to speed/match fitness I hope it's Toby/Sanchez as it's a much better pairing and they ended last season well as a pairing.

Sanchez has to be a starter as the other 2 are too slow.
