Wouldn't surprise me if the fact he's struggling to find form and regain any semblance of athleticism is due to the "mystery" surgery he had early in July. The fact that they didn't disclose the nature of the surgery was odd at the time.

What's amazing is how much heavier he looks than earlier in his career

I feel really sorry for him. He was a very good player for us, but the issues he's had over the last couple of years have obviously had a massive impact on him. I'm really not sure what the solution is. He needs game time to get fitness back, but it looks like the problems run deeper than that and with all the other issues in the squad at the moment we can't really afford to carry him in games.

I guess the other issue, and I know people hate talking about this, is his home grown status (in the league anyway).

I'm not sure he does need game time to get fit. He can get fit in the gym. He needs to shift the weight for a start. Once he's in better shape, then we can get him up to speed with match fitness.

Horses for courses player, against Burnley he was what we needed, against Bayern he was toast. Whole squad of them it seems.

The thing is he truly believes he is a top DM and that is where he wants to play. Sadly he is deluded then. He is a million miles away from being a CL level quality CM/DM. He can’t even get into a poor England midfield which consists of let’s be honest, a poor bunch of players including Winks and Rice.

The thing is Dier is a donkey at CB too.

Can't you just come on here and give your opinion on things without being such a prick about it.

The way these guys are trained and supervised, you have to be beyond ignorant to think they let people on the field if they're overweight. And still; before we get a top class DM in, he's the best bet we've got in terms of knowing how to play that DM role.

Even if him pressing Neuer midweek was pretty strange, to say the least.

I think he just needs to concentrate on being a good centre back. He was never that amazing as a DM anyway Poch just created a system where he was able to do a job without totally excelling.

Maybe, but I've seen him play well in midfield for England as well. He does look more like a CB these days though.

His positional discipline seems to be all over the place at the moment. That's a much bigger problem when you have no recovery pace either. I wish he'd just do the simple stuff in front of the CBs - I'd be fine with that, but maybe Mourinho is OK with him pressing the opposition RB or goalkeeper. I can't imagine why that would be though.

Was genuinely much better today. If he can play his way back into form it would be completely transformative for the team as a whole. I still think we need to make a DM our number one priority in January, as Dier has been woefully inconsistent and we really need two in the squad anyway, but if he can play the way he did today we'll be so much better off.

We were away against a slick passing outfit who are also a very good side. This is the sort of match where he’s meant to struggle but he was our best player today.
