Dier was let down by the front 4 today. They gave it away so cheaply so many times with sloppy passes. It just put us straight back under pressure.

Dier also have the ball away a lot though. 18 times, second to Jan on 19.

Definitely one of his better games in a long while though. Not the answer long term but if he can keep improving he can at least do a job until we have better options.

Where are those stats from?
Seems rather high, that 2 players gave the ball away 37 times.

I think it was appendicitis rather than a full ruptured appendix. Pretty routine, though for the rare few it can have additional complications. Normally takes 5-6 weeks to get back to relative full fitness. Whilst not ideal I don't think that's the reason his form dropped off a cliff prior or after the op.
It was a ruptured and perforated appendix, followed by complications, followed by something else.

It was mid-December last year, Spurs were about to play Burnley at home in the Premier League and Dier reported feeling unwell. He would be stood down from selection and on match day he was overwhelmed by a crippling abdominal pain. His appendix was perforated and infected – a dangerous situation – and he needed an emergency surgery.

Dier, who started at centre-half in the 4-0 Champions League win at Red Star Belgrade on Wednesday, has not spoken previously about the details of the illness. When he opens up about the long-term consequences, he provides a context to his on-field struggles.

“It was quite serious,” Dier says. “At the time, there were a few players at the club with a stomach ache, so we just presumed it was that, which is no fault of the medical staff at all. They treated me fantastically. I was at home and I had to be rushed to hospital and I had the procedure straight away. I was very fortunate like that but it was just very difficult afterwards. I kept on getting ill.

“My immune system just really struggled with the medicine after the appendix and I kept on getting ill. People said I was injured but I was never injured. I just kept on falling ill because of it [the appendix], which was very frustrating.”

Dier was unavailable for five weeks after the operation but, when he returned, he did not feel right. He appeared to be trapped in a negative spiral. With his body run down, he would feel knocks and struggle to recover from them or fail to give himself sufficient time to recover fully.

To Dier’s mind he was never injured; rather laid low, primarily, by the after-effects of the appendix issue.
He would be unavailable for further spells until the end of the season and then, when he addressed what he hoped would be a full pre-season in a non-tournament summer, he was forced to have further surgery. No information about this “procedure” has ever been made public.

It's about time people started to cut the player some slack where this is all concerned. He is not 'shit' as many love to tell us, he is a wonderful footballer when he's fit and playing well. Only right now he's not. If he can get back to his best that would make for a fantastic addition to the team, not to mention the squad, it doesn't happen overnight, it takes time and if he's lucky and the club show some patience we'll be well rewarded.

Sofascore. They are high numbers. The average on the app (for midfielders and fullbacks) is probably closer to 10.

Not for our game.
Jan was highest at 19, and most around 12 or 14

137 (I think) in total for out field players.

Sissoko only 7, lowest of the team, but only touched the ball 47 times. Only Gazza, Son and Kane saw less of the ball. (Dier 74)

For wolves:
Neves 18
Moutinho 23
Adam 26

Just to put it into context.

Who scored.com (use opta) have all of the loss possession much lower, but they don't include miss placed passes in that. I think its just losing the ball while a player has it. Its why I thought your looked high but its just reading them in different ways

Exactly this. I hope the people who've been slagging him off never complain about players lacking loyalty. Loyalty works both ways.

Injuries and illness destroyed him, time to move on. Similar thing happened to Wanyama who was better. I thought he would become future captain but I said similar stuff about Sandro before. Even if he gets to his form from few years back it wouldn't be good enough, it was good then because he was young and had potential to be even better and be a complete DM. That potential is gone now and we need to do better. Like NBA with 3 point shooting, football has evolved to teams filled with athletes, agile DMs who can defend, fast fullbacks who can cross, pressing that starts from a forward.

a 6ft 2 inch traffic cone.

Sad thing is, he's probably working hard trying to impress Jose in training but his body and health are failing him. We can't even claim that he offers leadership or reads the game well because he's struggling to even get to grips with the intensity of the game. Gotta give Skipp a chance moving forward.

With so many SUVs on the roads that makes him useful then.

Don't hate on that. I'm just showing that no matter the contrary evidence an argument can still be made to support Eric Dier's inclusion.

He sucked today but playing him with Sissoko does him no favors. If he is to be an anchor that’s fine he’s the best fit for it we have in the squad but you have to have someone next to him who is better on the ball.

Agreed. Thing is he was never great. He was solid enough in a team alongside Dembele and peak Wanyama, other than that he's only ever been average at best. He is now dreadful, looks utterly out of his depth every time he steps on the pitch. If Jose continues to give him such a key role it will be his downfall, I'm certain of it.

Sigh, painful watching him. Reminds me of when we had no proper DM somewhere in the mid 90s and decided to play Colin Calderwood in there. Mousa Dembele was a monster of player but also a fantastic turd polisher who helped Dier look better than he actually is. He is a CD playing in CM....miles off a quality modern day DM.

He was shocking, lacks mobility and actually lacks awareness then again he isnt a midfielder... i dont blame him, I blame the Jose for playing him in the midfield...

Its not like Dier is going to turn around and say to Jose sorry boss i aint playing...

He isnt the only one.
