Sigh, painful watching him. Reminds me of when we had no proper DM somewhere in the mid 90s and decided to play Colin Calderwood in there. Mousa Dembele was a monster of player but also a fantastic turd polisher who helped Dier look better than he actually is. He is a CD playing in CM....miles off a quality modern day DM.

I agree except for the part that he is a CD. The constant cries that he is either a CM or CD depending on his latest crap match at either position i feel is what has kept him around. He is not good enough full stop.

Yup agree, he isn't good enough for either position.

Dier is great if he can sit and screen the defence and drop into a 3 when required.

He can and does make forward passes when he gets his head up (admittedly this isn't very frequent).

When your midfield partner is continually going walk about to cover your half arsed right back then you are always going to look bad.

He needs someone next to him who is good on the ball and is always looking forward.

Ndombele needs to get back to fitness asap.

Absolute joke that he keeps starting games. About 3 yards behind play when we are defending, hides when we had the ball. 27 touches yesterday, lowest of anyone on the pitch in the first half.

It is because teams pass the ball around him. Honestly he is a throwback to the awful years in the 90s when we had absolute donkeys in CM.

The funny thing is, he doesn't see himself as a CB, he actually believes he is a CM. But he actually looks like a CB trying to play CM and I don't mean the way Ledley used to do it.

Dier is nowhere near good enough at CB or CM.

I think both he and Winks look worse because the shape of the team is wrong - at least partly caused by players having to fill in Aurier's runs up field (and then strolling back). Sissoko gets a slightly easier ride because he charges about like a man possessed and wins back possession but it's the formation that's the real issue.

I do however think Dier gets sucked towards the ball even when other players are there to cover - was watching Mount yesterday and he was always wandering away from Dier and into space.
