So Dier’s brother caused the confrontation then Eric himself made the situation worst but he’s in the right?

The “fan” was obviously being a complete twat but it’s the stewards job to sort it out not Eric’s brother.

Eric has let the club down and I expect a massive ban and more bad headlines that wasn’t needed.
like i said, your choice to not help your brother. i respect dier tremendously. family is bigger than football.

His brother caused it. I’d be fuming with my brother for getting involved ??
i wouldnt be upset with my brother for sticking up for me. and even if you want to lay the blame on the brother instead of the fuckhead who started it eric still has a right to defend him once it escalates.

In a everyday environment maybe not when you’re professional.

There’s thousands of stewards and police around.

I get he’s lost his head but imo he’s let everyone down.

Anyway that’s just my view

From that Guardian piece.

Faced with the 6ft 2in Dier coming towards him, what did the fan do? He appeared to make conciliatory gestures with his hands before turning and legging it.

?

Yeah proper double hard bastard giving it all the gob and then getting on his toes the second he realises he has consequences for it.

I had to disagree with this view entirely.

He hasn’t lost his head, if anything kept it calm, all video footage shows him going up, grabbing his brother, shouting over the noise and getting him out of the place.

Whether it’s my brother, son, dad, mother - I’m never walking by knowing they were in some kind of altercation, regardless of job, location or my own safety.

it’s just how I’ve been brought up, family first.

he absolutely did the right thing by going up there and getting his brother out of that situation.

to say he let people down is just plain wrong.

do you have brothers, or close family?

could you sit there and listen to them get abused?

I couldn’t and won’t.

funnily enough I deal with this on a level, so I probably understand the frustration a little more how frustrating it can be watching a family member play football and the reaction of fans, both sides have towards said family member.

must hard to hear - currently I take myself away from those situations , sometimes in a stadium environment you can’t. It ain’t nice hearing reasonably negative stuff about your family imduring a football match, let alone horribly negative stuff let alone plain abuse.

We live in such a fickle society. It's easy to be pious on the internet.

(this isn't aimed at Shady btw just incase anyone thinks I am taking a shot, I'm not)

Those that are claiming that he should have remained professional are so far detached from reality.

Far from it, Dier’s actions were grossly disproportionate with the incident involving the fan and his brother. He’s gone way over the top and should and most likely will be punished for his actions.

Oh come on. The game was over, he left the pitch, walked up the rows seat row by seat row with somewhat of a control over himself, was contained effectively early on and didn't even get within striking distance of the idiot, and most probably deliberately wanted it to stop there once his brother was safe. How much of an issue are we going to make of this.

Is that what all this shit is about. 2 guys having an argument. Doubt anything would of happened because people don't want stadium bans.

I can understand a few fucks and shits being said at games but why do grown adults need to spew such vitriol at players, and what's worse is our own players as well.

I think some people don’t understand how protective even reasonable people get over their younger siblings. I’d consider myself to be a very well behaved individual but god forbid if anyone was to threaten my younger siblings my anger would know no bounds.

As I said detached from reality, obviously we all agree that he went OTT but the point is that we UNDERSTAND why he did it, it was a perfectly reasonable response given the circumstances.

I disagree with a lot of this. He’s a professional who is representing the club.

Was the fan shouting stuff at him right no but Eric knows the situation and knows this is part of the job.

I keep seeing that comments his brother was being abused but from what I’ve read it was his brother that caused the confrontation that kick it all off.

As for keeping his head this I can’t agree with, if you actually watch the video you’ll see his brother and multiple fans are holding him back. He completely lost it.

As for do I have family off course and as you’ve asked I’ll let you know that me and my son (17) are both football officials. I currently do semi pro in the united counties league and below and he does our local youth league upto U16s.

I get abused and have to watch my Son get abused weekly by players and fans and I can tell you it’s not nice but it’s unfortunately part of the job and if anything gets out of hand I go through official channels.

Unfortunately if the Fa follows the rules he’ll be getting a ban which is not needed at a time where he was just starting to look good for us.

Anyway I’ll leave it hear now and move on ??

Nah don’t move on, these discussions and different opinions are healthy if can be done in a respectful manner.

I just couldn’t ignore that level of abuse, no matter what I did for a living.

I guess it’s ingrained in me.

may son plays academy football, as a keeper - I find it difficult to contain emotions when I hear groans about him letting a goal in, or levels of negativity from parents, players, supporters - so I take myself away from the others, pains me to see him have to deal with it.
Incidentally, he has his referee’s course in a few weeks, so no doubt I’ll be watching him and even more people and trying my hardest to keep schdum when he will get abused - I guess that’s the crux of my issue, abuse and those that feel they have the right to abuse people - I don’t like it and cannot sit by and listen.
I have no doubt that Dier’s brother was involved in a spat, and I absolutely have no doubts that this was in retaliation of abuse directed towards him, his brother and possibly family.

I also know that when being held back from helping a family member in those situations it only makes people angrier - once he got hold of his brother, he dragged him away.

I love the double standards of the football community. Fans performing all sorts of debauchery and shouting a colorful variety of expletives, but as soon as a player does something it's "oh my!", "there's children here!", "a professional can't be at that!" lol
