Player Watch: Erik Lamela

Sadly, Lamela is just another in a long line of clearly talented footballers who, when fit, have always shown that talent but their careers have suffered because of one injury after another. Bit of a Spurs thing isn't it? Sure we have players we can all remember promising so much but never ever having the time to put it all together.

20 minutes is better than nothing, but in this current time and this era it just isn't enough.

Not knocking his ability or his commitment just really sad that another season is (seemingly) ending all too familiarly for him.

edit: Not ability = Time

There's def something wrong with our medical department.

It's impossible he's that crooked cuz of his genetics.

I love Lamela so much I'd go gay for the guy- he's far and away my favorite player on the team- so reading these comments actually hurts me-- and yet I totally get where his detractors (even those who say "I get it- he's great when he's on the pitch- but he's never on the pitch!") are coming from.

It makes me want to cry. When he plays, he fucking changes the whole vibe. He bleeds navy blue and white. He is fearless. He stamped on Fabregas. The list is endless-- he's perfect. Except that he's not, because this injury-stuff is every single effing season.

It's so tragic- and so Tottenham: the most Spurs-player of all is the one who can't string two games together. Unreal.

Why not? You really think Levy would have replaced him with anyone?
Would it have mattered if he hadn’t been replaced ? Great competitor but he is hardly ever available and can never be relied on to string two games together.

If we had more players that had lamelas passion in the team we would be in the top 4 already. When he isn’t injured he puts literally his life on the line. Take note Tanguy and co.

I am very fond of Lamela but I just can’t see how, even in a 25 man squad, we can justify him next season. Through no fault of his own, we just aren’t getting any value out of him. It’s a huge shame, he again started this season very well, but as it stands he’s contributing so little when he should be in his prime.

Like others have said, it is beyond ridiculous now. It's one thing not having him available when the rest of the squad is fit, but in times like these where we're down to the bare-bones it feels in an attacking sense, we need him fit for selection if for no other times.

I would sell him whenever a good offer comes our way, personally.

It has reached the point where it doesn’t matter whether you’re in love with him, think he’s overrated or somewhere in the middle.

It’s irrelevant as unfortunately he’s a crock. More sick note than Anderton ever was.

No good offer will come in for him though.
ITK has said for the last 3 or 4 years he has been available, but with his injury record (and probably what we would ask for him) and the wages he would require, nobody, not even West Ham, would take a punt on him

Personally I don't think he has a good back or hip anymore. The long injury layoff a couple of years back, when he was in worse depressed state when his brother met with an accident and his dog died, was hip-related IIRC? I really applaud him to come back from that set back to be still with us never short of an ounce of passion every single time.

But if the issues are persistent with his back/hip, it is likely to relapse every single season. My slip-disc never ever recovered, and I never expect it to. While it didn't give me any pain on a daily basis, when it relapsed due to low immune system, bad posture, weird bone alignment etc, it is just very irritating to do anything with that dull ache, much less engaging in a physical sport like football.

Yes mate, it does. You guys keep talking like he's a hindrance to this squad, but that would only be the case if he was actually getting in the way of some other player getting his place (and who would be any better than him AND the other options we have available right now).

And this is without taking into account the fact that he does have an important impact on this team whenever he is available, and yet fans keep complaining about him only being able to give us 20 or 30 minutes each game at the moment as he fights to regain fitness. I'll tell you what, if it wasn't for those 20/30 minutes and because he still has the possibility to regain some fitness and start some games, I would just write this season off already, because the rest of the team (bar Lloris, Sanchez, Lo Celso and maybe Moura) just aren't showing at the moment the fire or desire needed to get something from this season (would that be a top 4 finish, or a good run at the CL or FA cup).

Not sure how much transfer value he will have considering his injury record. If not going to get a decent fee we are better off keeping him and hope he gets an injury free season. It took me a long time to appreciate his qualities but is now one of my favourite players

The problem with Lamela is his injury record. He comes back full of beans then has another spell out injured.
