This guy scored 16 goals lasts season playing as a number 10. He should be the one driving with he ball and playing in the front three. Yes he is good playing deeper but I think he would be another level playing further forward. Just need to find the right combination behind him.
Its another example of a club buying a player who is showing quality and ability in a certain position, playing a certain way, and then once you get him asking him to do something else entirely.
Fkin stupid doesnt really do it justice.

Gio has been thrown around all midfield positions throughout his career. DM at PSG #10 at Betis and now a CM here. I don’t know what the answer is but it appears that it has to be contextual.

Tbh this is down to the change of manager. Poch signed him as an Eriksen replacement but now Mourinho has come in he’s playing as the Dembele replacement instead.

You know what I'd be tempted to try winks, lo Celso and N'dombele in a three. At least we would have good ball retention in CM. They may not be the most physical but nowadays I think CMS are small nippy with a good strong core to win the midfield battle.

I was thinking the same. It's not right for the future but probably the best we have now. Sissoko unfortunately keeps ending up with the ball at his feet in attacking positions and that's no good, he also lacks composure and positioning defensively.

That midfield yesterday, no wonder we had a poor game as Lo Celso was the only good ball player in that team.

Yep and I am interested to see how Winks would do in a proper midfield three.

Really a bit amazed we're not setting up like this. As soon as I saw the team sheet yesterday it was obvious we would create nothing. You can't have 4 forwards who all want to get on the end of things - who on earth is supposed to pass to them?

The position he excels at was proved at Betis, AM linking the midfield and attacking play. Because we have no DM we are now asking him to drop deeper and losing all of his quality in the final third, typical spurs instead of using players in their best positions we try to accommodate them somewhere else, been doing it for years. Baffling.

Because HW has zero strength, zero tackling ability and offers zero protection to the defence. He is no where near being the DM we need. Sorry to be so blunt, but HW at best would play in the TN or GLC role as a squad player.

Obviously he's not ideal there. But with 3 CMs you mitigate lack of natural defensive ability with numbers and organisation. And it's not as if there are any alternatives. Sissoko is an objectively diabolical central midfield player in a 2 - it's never once worked. If you remember when we played 433 away to Real Madrid, played very well, and Winks held the midfield and was man of the match. I don't see why that couldn't happen again. At least it would be a midfield of 3 players who can actually trap and pass a football to each other.

Playing him in a CM2 with a traffic cone and asking him to mop up, break up attacks, be the water carrier, be the playmaker, be the creator, be the sole outlet for our back 4 and provide all of our incisive passing, is probably asking a bit much.

Has to be the way forward, considering Skipp isn’t getting a chance for toffee. It’s not like we’d be sacrificing any of the defensive stability we are currently getting from our midfield two.

Please! You don't waste this player, you need Ndombele, so you have no responsibility to take control of the ball.

If we are to persist in playing 4231 he should be in the no10 position. Use a combination of Sissoko and Winks/Skipp in the midfield 2 to do the dirty work.

I really like him so dont take this as me saying he is shit but I look at the likes of Bruno and wondering why does GLC not have any goals or assists in the PL? Is it because we really arent playing to his strengths (which ive been harping on about in my view) or because we are overrating him?
