They've moved on from the Dier bashing most likely. I think the DM role is the most maligned among online footballing forums. The only DM in recent years I can think of who seemed to be exempt of any kind of OTT criticism was Sandro. Carrick, Parker, Dier etc all came in for slatings on a regular basis. Wanyama had a few months where people went easy on him, but then he got slated too.

One of the big problems is that it is the most understood role in football. Fans like to see a player charge 30 yards and put in a booming thundering tackle, completely oblivious to the fact that a solid DM would rarely do such a thing because they wouldn't be so far out of position to have to run 30 yards, let alone have to put in a booming tackle. It's why certain players Iike Michael Brown (and for England Hargreaves over Carrick) became cult heroes despite being utterly ill disciplined and generally shit at doing the job they were meant to be doing because half the time they've chased the play up the field, made a tackle near the oppositions corner flag and then the opposition have broke into a massive hole in midfield that they vacated due to their "heroics" the fans cheered so lustily for.

Then you have the other type of DM, the one who can play a little bit and is comfortable on the ball. If those players aren't some genius deep lying playermaker then they also get slated for their lack of creativity (even though that is not what they're in the side for).

It's a very ungrateful role basically, because to do it effectively means you're a player who should hardly get noticed on the pitch at all.
Michael Brown offers 10 times more to the team than Harry "sideways only" Winks

So who were you saying thinks he is rubbish? I’ve not read all 300 pages of this thread but I’ve been active on it a few days and I haven’t seen anyone suggest this is the case. I’m not picking on you, I just don’t know where this narrative that people are picking on winks has come from

See it now?

Of in Jesus we could sell Winks and Dele, cancel Gedson‘s loan, bring back Skipp and sign John Lundstram cut price we’d have improved our squad.

Saving Lo Celso for Brighton I hope. May have always been the intention to give him 45 minutes.
That would make sense, like how we built Ndombele up and are clearly trying to build Bale up, but there needs to be a message to Winks that he is culpable too and I just never see it. No matter how poor he is playing he stays on

He was rubbish last night. I don’t think he’s rubbish generally, just not good enough for us. As I said before he’s a bang average PL midfielder, albeit one horribly out of form
Seriously if he was in Bournemouth's team that got relegated with the likes of Lerma, Gosling, Cook etc He would still be playing Championship football this season just like those.

I wasn't questioning your judgement of him. You asked me where I got the idea that people thought he was rubbish. Have a read through the last few pages and you'll see the most recent examples. Everyone's entitled to their opinion though, I'm not going to try and convince people otherwise.

Quite possibly. And if he was in West Ham’s team he’d still he looking ok one week, passed by the next and playing with them. He’ll get another PL chance when he leaves Spurs, whether he takes it or not is a good question

Ok got your point sorry. Immediately after a performance like last night insults are going to fly around, but generally the original point I was trying to make was that Winks’ defenders (who are shrinking in number rapidly at present) take any criticism as meaning people hate him and think he’s rubbish. I don’t agree - the overwhelming majority would love to see him succeed and (last night’s horror show notwithstanding) just think he’s a bit of a 6 out of 10, doesn’t stand out for anything kind of beige rather than rubbish. Hopefully that explains it better

Plenty of worse players than him yesterday, he should stop shooting from outside the box though, it will never go in.

Take him out the team for a couple of weeks, SC will clamour for his return soon
They won’t. He’s already been out of the team for the Prem for a few weeks and last night was an excellent indicator of why. He is nowhere near our first team when everyone is fit and available

I don't think the 'minutes played' stat has any relevance at the moment as to who is rated higher. Winks has played a load of minutes in the Europa qualfiers which has obviously skewed the agenda.
