Maybe a few can put some speck on his name now. Was fantastic tonight, showed his defensive qualities also. Once Ndombele up to speed I feel confident that Winks can play in that defensive role vs most teams, maybe we need a bit more defensively in the big prem games but in terms of European football especially Winks is really suited to that role.

Actually one of the few who got fired up tonight. He is invaluable to our side. Great touch, good vision, progresses the ball and dictates the tempo. Unfortunately tonight too many of our players rotated in were rusty and lacked match fitness. Winks carried too many people tonight. He will play most if not all of our matches. Sissoko and NDombele are different types of midfielders and while Dier doesn't warrant a minute at the moment, we are in a dodgy situation re Winks at the hub:unsure:

He looked good. Think being subbed on the hour for practically every game has pissed him off

I thought he was our best player last night. CL football seems to suit him and he reserves his best performances for Europe.

He is becoming such a dependable player, week in, week out, you know what you're getting with Winks.
Unlike too many others, at present.

Blah blah not good enough. Blah blah overrated.

One game doesn't make him a top, top player. I still think he needs to improve a lot. And no, I'm not saying he's a bad player. But statistics from last season showed that he's a volume passer that doesn't play enough progressive passes (bottom tier in the league for central midfielders). The same goes for Sissoko. They play too much sideways instead of forward. I think that's one of the reasons why we struggle at times.

With that said, Winks was our best player last night, without a doubt. He must do performances like that more often.

It’s not just one game though. He’s had a fair few stand out performances for us. Given his age and his injury record you can forgive the odd game where he doesn’t have as much of an impact.

His talents are obvious to see though. Imo he’s a key player.

I never said that someone said it, just gave my opinion on him. I still think many of us overrate our central midfielders (not only Winks). They are a part of the problem, because they 1) doesn't make enough progressive passes and 2) they are not good enough defensively.

Ever since Dembele left and we stopped playing with a more defensive minded midfielder, we lose control of the midfield in way too many games. If Dier is not a part of Pochs plans, I would like a player like Ndidi alongside Ndombele/Winks. I think Ndombele/Winks would look way better with a player like that beside them.

That's not his job, Poch is not asking him to do that. His job is to keep and recycle possession and give it to the players capable of beating a man or playing a killer pass. I'm not having a go at you, but the people who fail to understand that are the same people that don't rate Winks and the same people who groan every single time a pass goes sideways or backwards, even though it means we've retained possession.

Sorry, I'm not buying it. Other teams that plays a similar style of play have midfielders that makes way more progressive passes, even though their job is to do what you describe. Only because his job is to recycle the ball, it doesnt mean that he can't make more progressive passes behind the opponents midfield more often and find his team mates in more dangerous areas. Progressive passes is not the same as making a killer pass. And the same goes for Sissoko.

In contexts to last night's performance he was a stand out and arguably the only one to walk off the pitch with their head held high so that should be praised and that post is made for those who think he isn't good enough for this team...look back in this thread to a few weeks ago where he had his detractors who are rather conveniently quiet now.

All the other stuff though I think you're right, he needs to get his head up more and play more forward passes and spot when players are free but that should be the least of our problems right now, at least we're getting a tune out of him.

I'm not saying it wouldn't be nice if he could also do that, it would obviously elevate him even higher but I don't think Poch is asking him to do it, maybe it's because he knows his limitations, maybe it's tactical and what he's wants him to do, probably a bit of both.

We've also got to be realistic, these kind of box-to-box midfielders who can do everything Winks does AS WELL AS the positive, defense splitting, progressive stuff are pretty rare.

And we happen to have one in Ndombele.

One thing about Winks is he gets it.

If we had a squad full of his attitude we’d be sitting rosey. His like are key to anything we do going forward. Tottenham through and through. Would be nice to add one or two more in the near future.

It’s early days for him, relatively speaking but I can see him becoming a leader in the dressing room.
