He looks a bit nervous on the pitch recently, his timing is off. Once he was nearly perfect against Real and Liverpool when we beat them 4-1. He needs to calm down and get his confidence back.

To me he still very young and inexperienced. He has the skills to being a very good number 8 and it's down to whether or not he can develop the mentality to be a top football. but i still dont get why people are so quick to write him off.

That would have been his first assist from open play after being in the squad for 4 years now.

modric didn't have all that many assists either for a creative midfielder and look at Alli's goal yesterday, Aurier got the assist for the simple layoff, but it was Eriksen's pass that opened up the defence. Winks has had his fair amount of similar "hockey" assists over the years.

But I do agree he needs to be more aggressive and responsible for directly creating more chances and making more intelligent runs attacking the box. Qualities I do believe he has within himself if he ever develops a braver mentality that top footballers have.

Modric in 160 games for Spurs had an assist for every 6 games he played. Winks in 121 games for Spurs has an assist every 60 games played. If he was truly has such an "eye for a pass" he wouldn't have this bad of numbers. As stated previously I know assists aren't the end all be all statistics for midfielders and how good they are but these stats do paint a picture to how reserved his passing is.

I think winks is a decent enough player but people really aren’t doing him any favors comparing him to Modric, Xavi and whoever else however loose it is.

yeah and to me it's a bravery/mentality issue not an ability issue. It's what separates the great players from what Winks currently is, a tidy but ultimately average player.

It's a matter of whether or not he can develop a confidence and arrogance to his play that would lead to him becoming an offensive factor. And to me he's still young enough to improve. Will he or not is totally beyond me.

This is the problem players like Winks and Moura have. The movement from other players has been shocking. No player should be asking for an option when they are attacking, those options should be there already. Winks is about moving the ball around quickly and transitioning play from defence to attack... But the attackers need to be giving options, not be asked to give options.

This is going to sound harsh but he’s a squad player at best, definitely not a first teamer. Maybe someone to bring off the bench to slow a game down to hold onto a lead. Can’t tackle, can’t shoot, rarely scores or plays an incisive forward pass. Only seems to be good at recycling the ball sideways. Biggest asset is he’s home grown.

He was great for us against Real Madrid and in second game against City in CL. Good squad player but not a starter material.

daft comments on here. He's had a bit of a dip but will kick on. Lot's of you will ignore your own posts and be raving about him over the next year.

He's stopped moving the ball forward quickly its really disappointing. Could be a team thing, could just be him but I've seen all the midfielders try and push the ball forward quickly recently (not usually with much success). I wonder if he hasn't got the range of passing, he's good for those short quick passes but cant get the ball out wide quick when we recycle the ball.

Winks is a good player, that can only become a great player if he took on an attacking MF role and succeeded or a defensive one. He is in the middle of both and not much of either.Thats his problem. We can see some great passes on the rare occasion, and some good tackles occasionally too He has always seemed a bit of a Carrick type. Im not sure where this works with us. We need a strong DM behind Ndombele.
Skipp seems a better prospect at the CM spot than Winks. Winks is listed at 45 mil on Transfer Market,Im not sure if that's a close figure for him but if we need to sell to buy,I think using 45 m towards a quality DM would help

If winks wasn’t from the academy i guarantee the ones who defend him would slate him every week average and nothing more than a squad filler

Sadly I don't think he will be any more than a squad player for us.

He's not a defensive midfielder and he doesn't move the ball forward either frequently or fast enough to be play in the other midfield positions.

It may be an unpopular opinion but I think we should consider moving him on while we can get a good price for him.

Sell all our players.

Might need to keep a few of the home grown types about otherwise filling the squad out will become an issue, just a thought.

A bit of a dip? Please tell me when he had this glorious run of top form which preceded this said dip?

Analysing his spurs career to date, you actually have a bang average academy kid who everyone got excited about and overrated and started comparing to Modric, Poch had a hard on for and of which partly led to him losing his job, he had a ridiculously short peak where he played well in two CL games against good opposition, and now he’s reverted to the average player he is. I’ve never seen Winks put in a top class display against PL opposition, that says it all. Has he even ever won a MOM award for Spurs in 100 appearances in the PL? Of over 100 first team appearances he still dines out on two CL appearances where he didn’t even register an assist or a goal. The number of goals for Spurs he has scored you can count on one hand. He doesn't offer any defensive protection, and he doesn't offer any creativity or goal threat.

He should be at a mid table PL club, he hasn't dipped, this is just his level.

Unfortunately he isn't a Carrick either. Carrick was a tremendous forward passer, could pass between the lines with his eyes closed, read the game exceptionally, always knew exactly where to be to intercept the ball. We are talking about a key CM of multiple title winning United sides. Winks isn't fit to lace his boots.

I agree. He might make a good job out of a mid table team even be a captain but if he continues the same way with us he will just melt away. There is something deep in great players where they have to zoom and show the world what they can do,Winks seems happy being anonymous. You are right 2 CL games doesn't cut it
