His turnaround this season has been amazing. It just shows how having a player you've shared a loads with on the pitch helps massively, as opposed to being played with Fazio or Kaboul.

Anyone remember this article from the mirror written by Sherwood about Vertonghen last year?

Just a year later Villa have the 2nd worst defence in the league and Vertonghen and Alderweireld are statistically the best partnership in the league. Funny how quickly things can change :)

Certainly been an unsung hero this season. Has been fantastic.

Also he always could defend. Just needed a regular partner and a protective midfield. Under Sherwood we could of had a back 4 of Zambrotta, Cannevaro, Thuram and Maldini and still concede a hat full each game, so exposed was the defense.

his contract situation is an odd one, all the talk was he was going to sign a new one but as far as im aware he is still on the same contract he signed when he joined

Love Jan. Not as good as Toby but together they are great.

Pretty clear yesterday how important Vertonghen is. Alderweireld, for all his strengths, is nothing when he is not playing a part of a settled partnership/unit. Clearly he needs Vertonghen by his side. The difference between the other CBs and Vertonghen is akin to the difference between a good rosso wine and a heavenly brunello wine from Montalcino.

Sherwood is an absolute fuckwit

Sign Micah Richards the right back, make him my captain and play him in the middle out of position and pin all of our hopes on him, that'll work well.

Moron. How he had any supporters here is beyond me.

Have to give it to both players

Neither are the same level without each other but together they are immense.

Credit to them that they can transfer their friendship into a formidable unit on a pitch they know each other's game inside out and it just gives them an air of confidence I guess but excellent for us as they seem to love playing with each other

http://www.standard.co.uk/sport/foo...e-midfielders-says-alan-pardew-a3163606.html?

The north Londoners extended their record at Selhurst Park this afternoon - at the expense of Palace - but Pardew was full of praise for the defensive duo.

"They have two central defenders who are like midfield players," he explained.

"They rotate the ball - it's frustrating at times - you have to accept that they will have the lion's share of possession."

"They have a lot of attributes with their two centre halves being so natural on the ball. I watched them both at Ajax - many, many years ago. It feels like 20 years ago but it was probably only about six.

"They rotate the ball well and in possession they're as good as any team we've played. Out of possession maybe that's where they just need to tighten up a little bit."

I normally won't post Phil Thompson quotes but these were positive ones...

http://www.hitc.com/en-gb/2016/02/0...-the-improvement-in-flaky-tottenham-hotspur/?

Phil Thompson praises the improvement in 'flaky' Tottenham Hotspur defender Jan Vertonghen

However, it is not until this season, and the arrival of Toby Alderweireld, that Vertonghen has been able to convince Thompson of his quality.

“Vertonghen and Alderweireld have been the best two centre backs in the Premier League by a mile,” Thompson said.

“They’ve been great. I always thought Vertonghen has been a bit flaky, but Alderweireld has brought it out of him, and he’s been rock solid.”

Fortunately no need to rush him back - Wimmer doing an excellent job.
Indeed as Wimmer is man in possession hope Jan has to wait to get back in team.
