I think the boys lost a yard of pace & isn't reading the game as well as he was, so I would give him another contract.

If we didn't buy another CB I think we have enough available in the squad to make a decent CB pairing or a 3 & for me the issue is in mid-field because I don't think Winks is anywhere good enough as a DM in front of the back 4 or 3 & we need someone stronger there. I also think Dier isn't good enough now & would be better suited to CB in a 2 or a 3!

I think you make the right point but the conclusion is not accurate. Both Dier and Jan are good enough to play, as are Sanchez and Toby, and Tanganga I would think. But since we lost peak Dembele, Wanyama and peak Dier in DM all our CBs have looked shaky at times. If we had solid cover in the middle our defence would look impenetrable like it did in Pochs second season

He looked as though he couldn't cope with the pace of the league any more, and struggled badly at times. And if a suitable replacement was brought in, I'd wish him well elsewhere.
But I'm fed up with the club losing players, and not adequately replacing them. Gotta keep him, if we can't/wont get a replacement. And hope he still feels wanted enough to give 100%.

I agree to an extent. He was iinjured for a bit, came back into a team that was adapting to a new way of playing and seemed to be struggling for confidence. His body language on the pitch suggested he way frustrated with not having the conditions to excel. He didn't look at his best. But he is still a top player and will be for at least one more season.

For me, he looks like the CL final hit his head hard. He probably wants one more crack at winning something. If inter come in for him, I would think that would be a deserved opportunity and I I would have nothing but fond memories.

If he can get his head right to play for us he would also be a big contributor to our team, he could be our Naybet for next season. Think his head is elsewhere though.

Replacing super Jan like for like? That would take a lot of money. We were so lucky to have him for so long.

If that's the case then we really should get rid of Dier as well. I have hope of a comeback from him though, with rest and focus on the centre back position.
I too have hope for Dier. I think the extent of the illness he suffered has been massively downplayed and, when you consider that elite sport is all about marginal gains, had much more of an effect on his performance levels than people realise.

If you take away Jan’s left back performances this season would we be having a different conversation? The season so far is a little bit foggy to me now but pretty sure he was up against tricky pacy wingers when he was at left back most of the time and he was getting roasted one on one and his confidence seemed to dip. Has he had a really awful game at CB this season?

Don't think he's had an awful game, just don't recall an outstanding one, could be wrong. That's the thing though, he is normally so good that this discussion would never happen. I hate saying this, because he has been amazing, but at 33 he could be going the way of Rio Ferdinand - who was perhaps the best centre back of his generation - but after 33 he couldn't do it as consistently and by the time he moved to QPR he was a different player.

Love Jan, deserves a testimonial from us if he leaves. Still hoping he has one more outstanding season in him for us but no way would I begrudge him moving.

Interesting read. Although he has limitations, Dier had been a key part of our best team in years and it certainly was shocking to see him deteriorate so rapidly. It is clear now why! That type of illness/condition certainly explains why he was off the pace. When you go that long without a run of games its inevitable that you lose sharpness as well as confidence.

For me, there is still an excellent player there and hopefully this enforced rest will have given him a chance to get fully healthy.

I think Dier could become an outstanding and dominant CB. He is a player who could do with being a bit nastier and arrogant (in a controlled way). I can see him being our 'Ramos'. He showed in a couple of games at CB before the season was suspended that he is better at CB than he is in CM.

I felt like a lot of the criticism of Dier amounted to giving up on him too easily. He had a rotten year with illness, plus being in and out of the side is unsettling for anyone. He could still turn it back around and I hope he does.

Something similar could be said for Vertonghen. He had an interrupted and inconsistent season well below the high standards he has set for himself, but is it really fair to describe him as finished, at least at PL level? As I said above, it may be the case that a move to another league and another style of play would suit him as he gets older, but he wouldn't be the first to play on the PL and demonstrate continuing quality despite advancing in years and losing some pace. Either way, I'll wish him all the very best.

Mourinho also seemed keen on him when he was at Utd, so hopefully with faith from his manager and staying injury/illness free he could actually turn into a reliable DM player for us. Especially as there aren't a huge amount of options in the market for a DM right now.

Say what you want about Jan but every other CB we have unbalances us when played at LCB.
In order of increasing discomfort in that position; Davies, Dier, Toby, Sanchez.

Also when we've played an entirely Right footed back four (including Tanganga at LB) we have been awful down the left side going forward (hell even getting the ball into midfield was a struggle)

I saw a vast improvement in Jan's last few games before lock down and would hope he would (at least) see out the season.

Gutted he's going to leave without being given a send off, hopefully he can have a testimonial or come back at half time or something when crowds are allowed back.

Imagine thinking Cameron Carter-Vickers or Fagan-Walcott would be better than Jan. One of them has been shit in the Championship and the other is ok at youth level and untested at best.

Jan deserves way more respect.
Jan deserves all the respect in the world, a great servant for the club.

But before the season you'd probably have said "Imagine thinking Japhet Tanganga would be better than Jan?" Some guys just need the opportunity...

Not long left on his contract now. What a strange and sad way for his time here to come to an end.

Everyone has an opinion but as a matter of fact look what difference it made to the scousers by spending money on one quality player, although it could be argued that Manure spending big on Maguire has not produced results expected. So the moral of this comment is 'wtf, do I know
Keep it in your pants.
