I think the obsession comes from not having brought a DM in since Wanyama was clearly finished well over a year ago and Diers brother having replaced Eric some time ago too!

Had we had more options last night I’d 100% have preferred to have seen Tanganga in Diers position. Would have given us so much more athleticism and energy in the middle of the park and we would have won the ball back a he’ll of a lot more

Watching Dier again was painful. It’s sad where his levels have dropped to and is no way able to play that role atm

PS We’d probably have had more ball, looked better without possession - and lost!!!

We would be a lot better off just putting Skipp in the team. He was much higher rated than Tanganga in the youth teams, outperformed him and is a natural defensive midfielder who is capable of dropping into the back line. Dier is just too slow to operate in midfield now. His only hope is centre back but I don't think he is up to it anymore sadly.

Tanganga needs to focus on establishing himself as a defender as he has been outstanding since coming into the first team.

Very odd Jose's complete non use of Skipp

As you said, highly rated. Apparently wise beyond his years. Seems to be another perfect fit for Jose to mould into what he’s looking for

Hopefully he is and we'll see him involved soon!

I think it is harder for a youth midfielder to get a proper chance - so much responsibility in the middle of the park and many more opportunities to make a costly mistake. Takes a lot of trust in the player's ability to be willing to play him. Not saying Skipp couldn't do it but it's a big ask and Jose is probably a bit reluctant. That said, I'd love to see him given a proper chance.

I think it was WindyCOYS who said that Skipp has always been more of a box2box than a DM. So he struggles to get game time because he is competing with Winks, N'dombele, Gedson, and Sissoko rather than just Dier and Wanyama.

Skipp is seen more as more of a DM, but the pigeon holing means people forget he can play box to box. I definite;y would have it as his primary position. As above he has even played a CB a few times, for England as well. He has played at CB more than I've ever seen him play in an attacking position so definitley think he should be playing above Dier and Wanyama

"So José can't wait, he knows it's too late cos Jan's walking on by. They'll score when we're away, but don't look back Tanganga, you're here to stay."

If our aspirations are to be a major trophy winner playing skillful and entertaining football, then we have to have world class players in key positions and dm is one of those. Good is not good enough, so at some point JM has to make a decision who can step up to that mantle, if not now, at the start of next season. In my humble opinion on the evidence of what I have seen, none of our existing players could do that. So this is one instance where we have to get the cheque book out, move on the deadwood, and give future potential the opportunity to prove there worth by loaning out. The problem is who is out there that could bought for peanuts!

If I can offer one criticism of Tanganga it's that he has really undermined me and all the times I said we need to give Foyth and Sanchez time to develop their defensive skills :cautious:

So unlucky to miss the last couple of games

He’s been a breath of fresh air for this XI and we could really do with his pace, power, energy and defensive abilities

Jose needs to find a space for him somewhere. Hopefully starting at Stamford Bridge

This doesn't make any sense what Mourinho has done. Tanganga comes in and lights up our defence then you don't see him..AT ALL!

It's shocking from Mourinho, absolutely shocking.

Only a moron would drop Tanganga after the performances he has put in. He has been our best defender and actually provides aggression, pace and heart.

No matter what position, he simply has to be in the backline.

I’m sure he’s been saved for Chelsea and he’ll be given a specific role.

Funny that, bet you hadn't heard of him 2 months ago, amazing what a few games of form can do to a player's rep.

Interview obviously done pre-lockdown but a nice overview of his debut and positive words from him in general:
