I think in an ideal world we would like to keep Aurier as backup but I think such a player is still disposable at this time and especially when we need to trim the squad down.

I think Jose would take losing Aurier and having Tanganga as an option there as backup if it meant it increases the chances of being able to strengthen elsewhere.

If he stays I wouldn’t be surprised if he forced his way back in. Think he came across well in AON and close to Ndombele.

Agreed. Assuming Reguilon plays and does the whole LWB thing, and thus allows our RB to stay back a bit more, I reckon he’d do OK.

or at least I haven’t been wowed by Doherty yet. I think Tanganga could benefit from this too

As a related point, our CBs are shite.

I’m going to say the hard thing, Doherty gives me little to no confidence defending pacy left wingers (Rashford, Aubameyang, Mane, Werner, Zaha, I could go on). He was able to get away with his slow feet in a back 5 with Boly covering at Wolves but as we’ve seen in weeks 1 and 2 he’s been dusted by wingers multiple times. I’m sure he’s still adapting, but there’s a very obvious weakness there. We might be forced into selling Aurier, but with all the matches this season I think running Doherty into the ground in this flat back 4 is going to decimate our defense. Unless a really good fee comes in I’d like to keep Serge, at least until January.

aurier’s not perfect but defensively he’s robust and he’s decent on the ball, final pass let’s him down but I think he’s a touch under rated on the whole. People probably won’t like it because we’ve just signed him but I think he’s better than Doherty personally, definitely defensively anyway.

agree about the CB’s who played today.

He isn’t robust though; he is rash and a liability. He isn’t decent on the ball though; he picks it up in space but is really wasteful and can’t cross.

Giving him a new contract would be setting ourselves up for further difficulty moving deadwood on. He is a good lad, worked hard and played through personal tragedy. Fair fucks for that. However he needs to move on for both his own good and ours

Must admit I’m shocked at how bad defensively Doherty has been so far especially on one on ones.
Short sample size and early days but Aurier was much better than Doherty has been for us so far

Doherty is a wing back, it seems. Many Wolves fans have commented he struggles in a back four.

wouldn’t be surprise if mourinho already knew this and now that he’d got reg would be willing to play back 5 with wingbacks

Your right Doherty is a RWB and is being played as a fullback so the system needs to change otherwise he's a pointless signing.

Think the way forward for us this season is a back 3 with wingbacks. Rullion and Doherty suit a wingbacks role and 3 CBs instead of 2 could beef out a weak area for us

It’s hard as he’s just joined so don’t want to be on him too much but he does look a bit laboured.

I think we have to now play 5 at the back with our signings. 3 centre backs and 2 wing backs

In saying this I believe Aurier would make sense as our backup right wing back. So I would keep him.

Also makes sense that we are chasing another centre back, if this is the case.

5 at the back comes at the cost of a central midfielder. Jose has always preferred 4-3-3. I can’t see why that would change now other than a sky sports article taking a guess
