‘Cure’ found for coronavirus in Australia

by Sarah McPhee

A team of Australian researchers say they've found a cure for the novel coronavirus and hope to have patients enrolled in a nationwide trial by the end of the month.
University of Queensland Centre for Clinical Research director Professor David Paterson told news.com.au today they have seen two drugs used to treat other conditions can wipe out the virus in test tubes.
He said one of the medications, given to some of the first people to test positive for COVID-19 in Australia, had already resulted in "disappearance of the virus" and complete recovery from the infection.

Just need to wait till they called the PL off so Scousers dont win first

I heard people waffling on and on this morning on sky about how the integrity of football has to be seen and this season must be completed .
Since when have integrity and football gone hand in hand ? People are always going on about how "you must follow the government guidelines " but some how the season must be completed . Talk about vested interest those clubs that have a chance of achieving something and those that have the chance of losing something will have opposing views . So this alone namely the diverse views shows there is no integrity its all self interest . They should all take the view what is best for the nation as a whole and football reasons should not come into it . The idea that you would condense the rest of the games in a short space of time is idiotic for all the reasons we all know such as when do you start next season and the way this is going even that could be in grave doubt let alone trying to force one pint into a half pint bottle . the only sensible answer is to forget about football as there are more important things in life than football such as the lives of your loved ones and indeed the rest of the nation and world .

I don’t really get why PL are meeting this week. Situation be much clearer next week. It’s probably still to early to void the season.

Luckily, clinical trials can take anywhere from 12-18 months to be completed.

UEFA are meeting Tuesday. If they order all countries to void their leagues then it could be that.

From my understanding uefa aren't meeting to discuss domestic leagues.

I don't think they would want to be responsible for that or the legal ramifications that will almost certainly occur afterwards. Would be far easier for the PL if one of the other main domestic leagues were to come to that outcome first though that's for sure.

I can't see UEFA going that far yet, they will postpone the euros, freeing up the summer to complete the current season to start with imo.

That was my thinking as well. I guess La Liga or Seria A would most likely do it as the Covid-19 has hit them hard. Even if many leagues are thinking about doing this. It is difficult to be the first.

Surely all leagues, have to come to a joint decision.

Can't have this 19/20 season still ongoing in England through September, for example while the other leagues are in in the 20/21 season preparing for the group stage of the Champions League.

Is this something where FIFA can step in?

Ornestien take on it all in his Monday column..

Personally I don’t think they will let the games go ahead behind closed doors especially if the government has banned large gatherings. They wont want to encourage people to congregate outside grounds like what happened the other night with PSG.. Also it will encourage people to go out and watch it in pubs round friends houses etc which with this social distancing they will be trying to avoid.
Thought the legal challenge bit to voiding the league was more interesting. If they can get a majority to support that decision then reckon that’s way it will go if the cant get league started by end of May.

Legal problems could see PL games go ahead with no fans
The potential for litigation should the season not be completed has already been acknowledged during discussions between the relevant bodies, The Athletic’s Laurie Whitwell explains.
Were the campaign to be declared null and void, there are a number of pivotal considerations beyond Liverpool’s title claim, including Leeds United and West Bromwich Albion each potentially bringing legal suits for some £150 million in lost earnings.
The pair are clear of third-placed Fulham in the Championship’s automatic promotion places and being denied a return to the Premier League in such circumstances could form the basis of a case against the EFL. On the flip side, relegating the clubs in the Premier League drop zone — Bournemouth, Aston Villa (who have played a game fewer than their rivals) and Norwich City — could prompt similar court action against the Premier League.
But there is a belief among administrators that, as long as a healthy majority vote in favour of whatever outcome is decided — should the matter get that far — then the Premier League and EFL ought to be safe from suffering a legal defeat. “If 20-odd clubs say, ‘Absolutely, we will bring it to an end now’ and one or two say ‘no’ then any judge in the land has got to be very careful about setting a precedent there,” said a source.
The desire to avoid such messy outcomes will be one aspect to the discussions between football shareholders this week, with one proposal centring on the promotion of Leeds and West Brom and no relegation from the Premier League, and then suggesting five teams go down at the end of the 2020-21 campaign.
Without a full calendar of games, however, the Premier League could be in breach of contract to domestic and international rights holders, while clubs could be likewise in jeopardy when it comes to advertising on shirts or LED hoardings.
“That means, with the best will in the world, games will be played behind closed doors,” said a source. “It’s all right that it’s supposed to be a spectator sport — football is nothing with the fans — but there won’t be a sport to watch if you’ve just lost all your contracts.”
Should players still be suffering from coronavirus, there is a view it could ultimately be regarded as similar to any other absence through injury.
It is expected the EFL will consider treating League One and Two teams differently to those in the Championship, given the increased importance of gate receipts to smaller clubs and potentially allow games to go ahead with fans. “You don’t necessarily have to make a unilateral decision about the way you handle all three divisions,” said a source.
All bets would be off, however, if the situation in society escalated to a state of emergency.

They are discussing domestic leagues and have a conference call with every league arranged.

Of course to discuss the Europa and. CL. I doubt they'll be making decisions on individual leagues, considering its the individual leagues who are contracted differently regarding media and sponsorship etc.

They may set a deadline when all games must be finished by. but with every country on a different timescale as to when this will peak how on earth can they?

I'm really sorry if I have missed this in earlier posts, but not sure how far back I have to search in the threads... what is the current status for spurs' (and I suppose other teams) squad? Sure I get that football games are off for the foreseeable, but in the meantime are the squad still training? Or are they all under imposed isolation, due to latest guidelines advising against mass gatherings?

Back training at Hotspur Way today I believe , hopefully Jose is working on the defensive process to stem the tide of goals we have been conceding.

I really can't see the season being voided. I think they will just carry on whenever that times comes be it April or August.

They're not going to carry on this season if we get to August - it throws everything off completely timing wise for the following season and potentially seasons to come, especially if the Euros are moved to Summer 2021 like expected.
