Premier League squad rules explained as Tottenham avoid naming Radu Dragusin after transfer

Spurs are set to complete the signing of Radu Dragusin from Genoa this week and they have been given a boost with the Premier League rules around new 25-man squads.

In order for Dragusin to play against United, Spurs will have to complete the deal by midday on Friday - the cut-off for any players to play at the weekend. All being well that should happen, but Spurs have also been given an added bonus with signing Dragusin - they do not have to name him in their 25-man squad for the second half of the season.

Every club names a 25-man squad at the start of the season and they can update that following the conclusion of the January transfer window, with new signings in. But there are rules around who they can name.

Premier League rules state: "Each squad contains no more than 17 players who do not fulfil the 'Home Grown Player' criteria. The rest of the squad, up to a total of 25 players, must be 'Home Grown'.

"Each club's squad list has an additional list of registered Under-21 players who are eligible over and above the squad limit of 25 players."

Dragusin turns 22 next month, but will be eligible for the Under-21 list by virtue of being 21 on January 1, 2024. The rules continue: "Under-21 players are eligible over and above the limit of 25 players per squad. For the 2023/24 campaign, Under-21 players will have been born on or after 1 January 2002."

With Dragusin born on February 3, 2002, he can be named on the Under-21 list, but will have to be named as part of Spurs' 25-man squad for the beginning of next season.
