This was brought up in the Chicago Spurs Facebook group and I'll copy and past the comment from there, but I found the conversation very interesting. Started with this post, wondering what the thoughts are on this one:

"Think it will turn real interesting if we leave the EU as all the European players in the prem will have to pass the same criterion as other foreign footballers , I.e play a certain % of their national teams games. It is estimated it will affect over 300 players in the top 2 divisions and players like Payet and Kante would not receive work permits. Hopefully our players have played the required % but teams like Watford and Newcastle could be bang in it.Also having large numbers of home grown players helps!!!!!!"

According to the Express, only Vorm and Wimmer would have failed to qualify for a work permit.

The teams most affected would be Villa, Newcastle, and Watford, who would lose 11 players from their squads and Charlton would lose 13 players

I'm pretty sure if Brexit happened the work permit system would be changed. The Premier League has some pretty big money to do some lobbying at Westminster and grease the right palms.

But if we vote out then Man Utd would lose De Gea, Herrera, Januzaj, Martial, Mata, and Schneiderlin.

Who cares if brexit will ruin our economy, will make us an easier target for terrorists and see the return of Victorian workhouses, we have the chance to screw Man Utd over so let's take it.

They're doing a good job of messing things up on their own. I don't want to force them into changng things and accidently stumbling blindly into a decent team on the way. Keep things the way they are and give LVG and 4 year contract :woot:

So it would be good for the national team then?
Just because there would be less non brits in the league doesnt mean it would be good for the national team. Especially right away. England would still be largely average. Its not the amount of foreigners in leagues that hurt national teams. It's the quality of coaching at the youth levels. That is what you need to pay attention to. Not quotas or the European Union. Thats just taking the easy way out and ignoring the heart of the issue.
