f. Moura looked way below his normal levels of effort - I was expecting much more from him given his place is now under threat.

Yes , I noticed from the off that he was putting less in than usual . Subbing was right.

Lloris 9. Davies 8(?). Son and Kane both 10's.

Lamela and Lo Celso excellent when they came on. These two should always play together as much as possible, unless Bales going to take that RWF role.

N'dombele, suddenly started playing like a star just before the end of the first half and then was frustratingly subbed off. I want to see him play with another forward thinking midfielder and with a dedicated DM covering behind. A few games like that and if he can't do it then I'll join the bandwagon, still very unhappy with the way he's used.

Dier/Sanchez: Can't be our CB pairing going forward.

Docherty: Did exactly what we signed him for in the opening minutes of the game teeing up an excellent Kane goal that was disallowed, but then became invisible as our midfield got crushed by their press and our game fell apart.

PEH: Eh I really find it hard to rate him either way still. He certainly didn't stand out but then I still think that's a teamplay problem and we've not seen what he's capable of yet.

Moura: Really poor game, should have came off earlier.

Winks: Needs to play as the metronome in a possession based side. If Mou isn't going to set up for that then Winks either needs to become way more aggressive with his play or should be on the bench.

Kane is my MOTM all day long:
Scored / assisted every goal, but deserved more (3 goals and 4 assists would have been a fair reflection of his performance).
Constant goal threat (even in the first half) and converted every chacne that fell to him. Would have had a hat-trick if teammates had done a marginally better job of staying onside and picking out his runs. That volley was a class finish.
Son wouldn't have scored without Kane's superb passing and awareness. It was as though he had hindsight in the back and both sides of his head. The ease and execution of those assists would have been lauded as world-class if they'd been produced by Pirlo / Scholes / Beckham / Alonso / Fabregas etc. Factor in that he's a CF who was also getting into dangerous scoring positions throughout the game, and it really is a special performance. Bale will be even happier to be back after watching that!

Son was obviously fantastic. Capitalised on the space behind Southampton's high line with great movement and runs. However, I've only given him 9, instead of 10, because:
Took 45 minutes to start timing his runs to perfection (we would otherwise have scored before his first goal).
Shot straight at the keeper one-on-one in the first half (ultimately offside, but the flag hadn't gone up and my MOTM buried both of his shots in the same situation).
Shot almost 10 yards wide at 4-1 (game was already dead, but he still switch off for a moment).

The CM three was extremely worrying in the first half. I'd expect a CM two to do equally well (struggle no more) against that opposition. We should credit Southampton's high pressing, which made life difficult for them, but we clearly need to improve. Lo Celso and Ndombele at were postivie in possession though. I'm not sure whether our CM looked more comfortable for most of the second half due to Lo Celso or because Southampton tailed off.

Doherty was out of position repeatedly. Clearly needs time to figure out when to make forward runs in our system. In the meantime, our CM has to help him out (like Sissoko did for Aurier all of last season).

Our CBs were left far too exposed. With a better performance / balance in CM, they'd look far more solid. Doherty also contributed to their tough afternoon.

Davies was our best defensive player. Handled recent criticism / mistakes and the arrival of Reguilon well. Important block in the first half.

Lucas didn't offer much today. In fairness to him, Doherty's positioning probably didn't help.

Lamela was a very positive substitution and was slightly unfortunate not to get on the scoresheet. Demonstrated that he still has a role to play.

What changed the match was Gio coming on, not Ndombele going off and the fact that our forwards timed their runs better than in the first and Soton kept their naive high line the entire match.

Defensively we were still shite in the second. Even though we won today there is a lot to worry about.
Glad somebody gave Lloris more than 7. Would have been all over after 44 mins without him (and a mention to Davies). He could do nothing about their goals

Big question for me is whether the defence and midfield were atrocious in the first half because of the selection, fitness or Mourinho's coaching. After the last week I still fear that it's Mourinho :-(

If we can play like the second half every week - keep it very compact and take advantage of errors and hit them on the break then we should be right up there

Mate. It's a bizarre penalty. In tightly packed defensive areas, I'd be telling my forwards to aim for defenders arms deliberately. Madness.
Unfortunately for us, that's exactly what Klopp told Mane to do and on the 1st June 2019 within 5 mins the start of a particular game it worked a treat for them..... the rest most regrettably is painful history.....

Mourinho"s tactics will always give me heart palpitations, although today they (Tactics) came off.

Much better second half where Ndombele's time added on first half magic was the catalyst for our turn around.

Who do you give MOTM to? Kane who had four assists with his goal, or Son who converted those four assists into goals?

Sonny my MOTM

Oh, and the referee David Coote need to do his homework as the new rules would dictate the penalty given to them was never one.

Happy with your MOM and play analysis, but don't go off on one saying it is the referee (and the VAR referee who called him over because he missed it in real time) that needs to do his homework about the new law (not rules), when indeed it is supporters such as yourself that needs to.
The relevant part of the law states

It is an offence if a player:
touches the ball with their hand/arm when:
  • the hand/arm has made their body unnaturally bigger
The above offences apply even if the ball touches a player’s hand/arm directly from the head or body (including the foot) of another player who is close.

And the FIFA directive is if the arm is not by the side of the body it is making the body unnaturally bigger.

Be upset with the new law (I don't agree with it) but actually understand the law first, then you will understand that was 100% nailed on, not even up for debate penalty, as was the similar one given against Manchester United, and as we will see given on every similar occasion this season.

Most here have nailed it. Kane said the plan was to exploit the space they’d leave behind, and we did that pretty well in the first half (just those offsides) and did it to devastating effect in the second half.

My issue is that defence. It’s still not working. Doherty is caught in no man’s land. Dier is not good enough. Sanchez needs someone more assured next to him; Davies, I thought was okay, but we know he’s going to be replaced.

I think we desperately need another CB, and I’m tempted to say we move to 3ATB, and allow SR and Doherty to bomb forward. We have Davies and Dier in reserve offering us plenty of flexibility, and we can change formation when suits, but just not sure we’re quite balanced enough yet. CB is massively important here.

Kane MOTM. Absolutely brilliant today.

Missed a bit of the first half , how did Ndombele do? What I saw he looked ok and did very well in the build up to the 1st goal. Was surprised to see him subbed a HT was he completely knackered again and subbed for fitness??

I think it’s more to do with physical condition, Jose said as much in post game interview - they had lots of bookings and lo celso would run at them causing them problems.

lots of games coming up so good to give half’s where possible tbh

What Shanks said, but I also think the booking Ndombele got counted against him as we really do not want any suspensions going into this period. A hugely encouraging half for him all the same.

I assume the 2nd half was a disaster given the reaction to Ndombele's sub on here :cautious:
Ndombele showed an amazing piece of skill....and his arrows into the box are brilliant. He got relatively high ratings today. However It seems clear that the problem was his mobility, he doesn't stop the other team in any sense, almost zero tackling, too slow to fill spaces and block off passing routes - in this respect he was awful. With Le Celso we regained the midfield and banged in a lot of goals. Second half much much better which I think is your point.

Building him up 15 minutes at a time?

He got 15 against Everton, 30 against Plovdiv and 45 today. It may just be that the coaching and fitness staff have identified this as the way to get him up to full match fitness and keep him effective in the time he's on.

I'm liking what I'm seeing so far from TN and the way he's being handled.

Very clinical, this won’t happen very often, on another day this would’ve been a score draw. Kane’s passing and movement was outrageous. Sons finishing was great. Crazy to say after a 5-2 win but the 4-4-2 isn’t working. Will Josè change it? I think not. We need a 3-4-3 formation for me. Dier and Sissoko need to be bench players at best. Winks could do with some time out the team, he’s lacking confidence and is not playing well right now.

I think we've seriously weakened our team in the right back area. I haven't been impressed with Doherty so far and hope he can offer a bit more energy than he's shown in the games so far. Serge was constantly marauding up and down the flank and is underrated in my opinion
