I think we've all been pretty stung by the Gooners winning the cup. It's put our recent failures, albeit with a good team, into sharp relief. It shows that to win trophies you need more than just a good team. For me the No 1 priority for the season is the Europa League. A realistic chance we can win it if we can get past Arsenal. Top 4 will be very tricky without squad improvement.

Trophies for me, league cup, FA Cup, either will do. I’d love to think we could go all the way in the Europa League.

We need to win a trophy, to shut the entire world up about how long it’s been, to get rid of the first thing commentary teams beat us with at the start of every season, and to finally change this mentality that seems embedded in the club that causes us to always go out in the semi final, or get to a final and not show up.

This is what José was brought in for, finally getting some silverware in the cabinet.
will DL back him that the issue, he didn't Poch , why would he back JM

With Mourinho at the helm and the year ending in one, we defnintely should win at least one trophy. Top four would be nice too, but very tricky.

Despite how poor they have been over the last few years especially with us finishing above them, they have still bagged three trophies which has put us to shame and magnified our situation.
Unfortunately this will put pressure on bus to win, but not aided by the looks of average signings coupled with the clubs ability to implode under pressure.

If anyone wants a reality check on next season, Utd (who finished fantastically) look like they are getting Sancho, and Chelsea have Werner and Ziyech, and might get Havertz.

We're being linked with Troy Deeney,

Honestly, a top 4 finish would be an unbelievable achievement

Not feeling that confident about the new season.

Chelsea have signed Werner, Ziyech and are about to sign Havertz and probably Chilwell.

Man United are looking at Sancho and are likely to sign him in the coming days to give them plenty of options up front.

Arsenal are favourites now for Willian and are being linked with Coutinho.

Man City and Liverpool will continue to strengthen.

We are being linked to a free transfer of Deeney. Also we will spend the summer haggling over 50p for Holberg, a South Korean centre back no-one has heard of, and some cheap full backs who will be no better than Aurier.

We will be battling to get top 6 with Everton and Wolves next season.

Taking in to account the existing quality of some of the teams above us, the signings made, the signings touted to be made, our purported budget...

I think we will be left behind in the race for top 4. Liverpool and Man City are light years ahead. Chelsea have added real quality and if they splash out on a defender will have left us behind. Man Utd have a great young attacking core and will splash the cash. I think we will battle it out for 6/7th with Arsenal / Wolves / Leicester / Everton.

I disagree. I dont think it's shameful at all. Arsenal won the FA cup through the combo of good execution (they were targeting Reese James 1st half), a star forward going on fire (Auba) and very bad luck on Chelsea (losing their top threat).

The PL table doesn't lie and is the only worthwhile yardstick with which to measure the team. Its any team's bread and butter and if this doesn't work, anything else is just window dressing.

We are a better team (still) than Arsenal because we defend better. We might not be in the coming season but your sentiment can only be felt by very irrational fans.

Three trophies compared to our zero is not irrational at all to, just accepting the situation and the clubs failings to grab a moment which it still cannot do.

Absolutely spot on we are in a battle for fifth at best, these teams are not affected by outside factors like covid which a club like ours is unfortunately.

Or you are alternatively just in total denial.
The worst Arsenal team for 40 plus years, has won significantly more silverware than the best side Tottenham have had for over 30 years

Think we might be good for about 70 points in the league, provided Kane continues as he ended the season and we manage his inevitable injury period(s). Results in the cups will as always be down to the luck of the draw and the chips falling favourably on the day.

Weirdly (rightly or wrongly), I’m feeling a little more confident about the upcoming season. Mainly for the reason that we are looking to improve areas where we are weakest (defensively and in midfield), whereas almost all of the teams and players mentioned are not doing that. Will the players mentioned improve them? Yes. Will it strengthen where they are weakest? Not in my opinion.

Most likely we’re battling for 5th to 8th with Arsenal, Wolves, Everton, Leicester

There’s an outside chance of 4th

As I’ve said elsewhere, 1 in 25 (possibly more) for 3rd

ps I know people laughed at these odds earlier in the thread because ‘there are 20 teams in the league’, but if you did, it’s because you don’t understand probability

Or weirdly because you know what targets we are after, but don't have the same knowledge in respect of our rivals.

To bring you a little up to speed Chelsea are looking at Ter Stegen, Chilwell, Rice, Stones, every one of them an improvement over that they have or we have, (and have already improved their top end signifcantly) and start from a better position than us anyway.
Arsenal have Saliba joining and are looking at Diego Carlos to partner him. (as well as looking at a few attacking options). They also have Tierney who missed most of last season with injury.
United can play Henderson in goal if they wish, and will be looking at top tier defenders also.

Every one of them will improve in areas they need, and in all likelihood will be prepared to spend on better quality players than we will.

Pointless talking about what Liverpool and City will do, we won't be doing anywhere near enough to get remotely close to them.

As many have said, with the amount of money Chelsea have spent (after their supposed punishment allowed them to stockpile cash) and Manchester United are now splashing the cash again, we will do well to get near the Top 4.

If this Jose hype is to be believed, then we have to expect that we will win at least one trophy.

So we need an inexperienced manager and an awful defence to win trophies, or do you mean we need a ref to gift us results in the big games? :p

I spoke specifically about the players mentioned in the post, mainly because most of them are either done or very close to being done by all accounts, rather than rumours or speculation.
I didn’t mention Saliba as he’s already been signed for a season, hence they aren’t looking at signing him to improve them, they already have him.
But thank your help, you really got me up to speed ?
