Rotating the CB pairing

What are peoples thoughts on this? I was watching soccer saturday earlier and the pundits were generally quite critical of AVB for constantly changing the CB pairing, saying that the CB pairing along with the keeper is one of the most crucial partnerships in the team and shouldnt be rotated.

I see there point but I also like the way we have rotated to suit the opponents we face. Ie when against a big strong striker ie Kenwyne Jones, Andy Carroll it makes sense to have someone like Dawson or Kaboul playing but when you have a nippier striker ie Aguero you need a CB who can read the game a little better ie Caulker.

Struggling to think of a team that Gallas would be best to play against though.........

Thoughts?

I dont necessarily mean rested as I dont think thats the reason we generally do it - I think we do it depending on who we will face. Our team in front of our back 4 has been pretty much the same when available this season but the back 4 have changed a lot.

I suppose any rotating is good so long as you are winning matches and will not get talked about so much(as in a negative way), but when Kaboul is fit, i would like to see him and Verts as often as is possible.

This part of your post seems to imply that every team has Andy Goram in goal...

rotation is great with 3 top CBs,... Spurs will have 4 when Kaboul retuns (y)

If the rotation see's us playing consistently well right through to the end of the season rather than having a first 11 full of player blowing out their arses after easter and dropping points left right and centre as the squad players are also out of form due to lack of football before hand it will probably be seen as a positive that we were able to rotate and keep everyone in the squad fit and fresh without either becoming rusty or over played and exhausted

Time will tell I guess but with the heavy fixture list we have and the amount of injuries we have been dealt I think its maybe smart t keep as many of our first team squad both rested and match fit as much as is possible without adversely affecting results and making use of the strength of our squad (which is none too shabby)

How can they be critical? Have they seen where we are in the league?

Their just clutching at straws, desperately looking for something to criticize.

I agree with the rotating to suit the opponents.

Possibly but that is very subjective and there is always room for improvement in football. Maybe their point is that if we didnt rotate constantly our back 4 and keeper would have built up a better understanding and the Lloris and Caulker mistakes (when Lloris called for it and Caulker played it) wouldnt happen. Just playing devils advocate there though.

I think rotating centre backs is risky, but Gallas can't play twice in 3 days anymore, so it's needed I guess. I'd hope that when Kaboom is back fit its just him and Vertonghen and they are kept together to form a partnership.

Kaboul as the stopper and Vertonghen as the ball playing CB, they should be able to handle all the different types of forwards in the league.

Id also like Caulker to be involved - the way he reads the game is very impressive and he is only 21 (today!!)

If we can have a back four that plays well consistently, regardless who is playing, we are almost there. No-one has been able to do that. Most of our partnerships seem comfortable. Coys.

By no-one I mean no other team.

how about the several teams he has started against and help us beat this season, United away comes to mind. He was much better than vertonghen against Villa the other day also. The disrespect he gets from some fans is cringe worthy

Easy fella! When everyone is fit, I dont see Gallas playing much - do you? I wasnt giving him stick - i simply believe that the others have more to their game than him.
