One thing that has emerged, and Alasdair Gold said this, when a club target becomes available for a good price like both Bergwijn and Reguilion, we will pay the money.

No idea if we'll sign him but I think if we sense we can get him for a reasonable price, we will at least try.

If this is our strategy and it gets us players like Bergwijn, Reguilon and Dias, then I think I might have to take back any complaining I’ve ever done (except for the Nelsen/Saha “title push”...)

Is Dias rapid? We really need 1 if not 2 rapid CBs. Part of the reason VVD is so good is his recovery pace. Same with King. Both had/have good positional sense but it's that recovery pace for when you switch off for a moment or someone hits a loose pass (Ben!).

I think something is going on behind the scenes here.

We hardly have any money at all is what we are being fed. Scrape 2 good value deals with Hojberg and Doherty.

All of a sudden we sign Bale on 300k a week (this is very un-tottenham), Reguilon for 30mil and are linked with big money moves for Ings and now Dias. We also sign Alex Morgan the biggest star in ladies American football.

Not suggesting a takeover but has some investment been lined up? Stadium naming? Not sure.

Possibly, or it could simply be that ENIC have finally realised without serious investment now, there will be no Champions League football any time soon, no trophies, and a real possibility of fan backlash at ticket prices once the stadium reopens.

i was thinking this, but naming rights would not be enough surly and we have an empty stadium and i cant see fans being allowed back in, as much im a corona optimist this season.

if spurs take an average of £100 per person 60,000 seats 25 games that is 150 million losss a year, now im not saying sports make £100 a head per game but it give you an idea

Correct me if I'm wrong but I believe I'm right in saying we are still getting our TV money which I think accounts for the majority of our income, our wage % level is well below other teams and we haven't blown the budget over the last few years so our financial situation is not the catastrophe some people think it is.
Benfica on the other hand don't have anything like the same TV money and needed the CL income which they've now lost and they may therefore need to sell a substantial asset to manage their finances.
All of which lends weight to the Idea that this bit of business may well be possible.

I don't think this deal will happen... But if it does or we buy another senior centre back (Milan Skrinar maybe) then I wouldn't be 100% surprised to see Sanchez leave to whom though I've no idea.. but just have a feeling Jose doesn't rate him that highly.

Agree. A fast player is essential. Most of our defensive players are slow - Alderweireld, Davies, Dier, Doherty, Winks, Hojbjerg all pedestrian. Dier builds up decent pace after 10-15M but is slow up until then. Sanchez is the exception, but typically it's the others that need pace to catch up with his mistake.

It wouldn't surprise me if Sanchez were moved on, he hasn't really kicked on in the way in which I think we hoped he would, don't get me wrong he isn't terrible by any means, but he hasn't really shown much improvement....

Foyth has promise but needs a fair bit of development whereas Sanchez is a league above Foyth but struggles against certain types of tactics.

We’ve then got Alderweireld who’s in decline and slow, Dier who runs in treacle and seems to be developing a scary loss of concentration and Davies whom albeit a very good defender runs in quick sand.

Tanganga is very quick but miles off from being ready to start at CB.

Sanchez is our only CB who would appeal to top flight suitors and command a hefty transfer fee. He is however our best CB in terms of raw attributes and with games and development he can ‘potentially’ develop into a quality CB.

It’s Alderweireld and Dier who have alarm bells ringing.

Our centre backs are simply not good enough, not reached their peak or are in decline.

Spot on CB needs addressing especially the way Jose plays we need to be solid as a rock.

Dias would be ideal. Come on Mendes make it happen.

Feeling a bit greedy saying so but centre back is also an area that needs upgrading.

Shake we didn’t push hard for Ake a year or do ago as well.

I don’t get the fascination with Ake, he’s very good with his feet but he’s not very tall for a CB. I know height isn’t everything but from corners and free kicks we’ve a nasty habit of being out jumped/fought.

Purely for the left foot, plus he’s been a midfielder and has decent passing ability.

And he looks like Ruud Gullit ??

If Benfica are willing to let him go for less than £50m, that would be a massive departure from the fees I’ve seen in the press. I know we usually see little smoke without fire, but I struggle to see why Dias would go for less than that.

Might have decided to take the Chelsea approach. Capitalise now whilst competition for player transfers is low, and many clubs find themselves in weakened financial positions due to Covid, etc. Would be quite a drastic change in approach, especially for Levy.
