Harsh... looks a LOT quicker than Tommy Tommy Tommy Tommy Huddlestone.

The worry, as usual, is that players look better, faster, quicker thinking etc. etc. in lower quality Leagues. Janssen ripped up the Dutch League and N'Jie did well in France too. I'd be surprised if Berge was high on our list tbh.

Who is though? It seems the players that have already had breakout seasons like Ndombele and De Jong are either too pricey for us or are coveted by the elite clubs. That only leaves players in the bracket below - those showing a bit of potential for unfashionable clubs, such as Berge. Whether he’s good enough I really don’t know but soon we’ll have to make a decision on a CM signing. Dembele and Wanyama are on their last legs.

Why weren’t we interested in Torreira in the summer? Looks a tidy player and wasn’t too expensive.

We were (and still are) linked with Barrios who is very similar in style and stature.

Sorry, that was in Response to comments about Torreira being an attainable target in the summer.

Don't apologise mate. Has Torreira done anything other than yesterday? Haven't seen anything of him myself.

He was also excellent at Sampdoria, was one of the most exciting DMs in the league. Far from unknown in Italy. A lot of hype around him as he's only 22. Was an obvious target for us.

He also proves that there is value in the market, just hope we can unearth a gem or two in January.

Would prefer NDombele if i'm honest but definitely a good plan B.

Not very comparable to each other in my opinion. Ndombele is certainly the one we need to replace Dembele, while Berge is an option to replace Wanyama. So far in his career Berge has anchored a midfield, the comparison with Huddlestone isn't that far off, just that Berge can move his feet.

I'll argue that Ndombele and Berge fill the same position in their respective teams but with different roles and it's all about how we want to play. Berge is not a destroyer and would probably not be an adequate replacement for Wanyama in that sense.
Berge and Ndombele are both ball-playing CMs but while Ndombele drives forward a lot like Dembele, he doesn't really make the team tick like Berge does.
It's like when we replaced Modric with Dembele. Everyone was focused on getting the exact same player in and a few fans were dissatisfied with the signing of Dembele in the sense that everyone could see that he was a splendid player but not the same type of midfielder as Modric. Looking forward a few years we've been doing alright and are now faced with the same dilemma but the other way around.
Depending on who we sign, we'll get different pro's and con's. My point is that Ndombele and Berge will be competing for the same spot in a system with two central midfielders, So do we go for the midfielder driving forward with the ball at his feet or the one that generally let's his passes do the talking?
If we look purely at style of play, Ndombele would be almost a like for like replacement for Dembele while Berge would be something inbetween Dembele and Winks.

I think you could play the two (Berge and Ndombele) next to each other from what I've seen of them.

Berge has played in the Europa League for Genk this season - wouldn´t that mean that he cannot play in the CL (or Europa League...) for us in the same season? If so: he would only (for this season) be a player for domestic cups and the PL. IF we buy him, it could be similar to Lucas Moura: get him in January to give him the whole spring as well as the summer pre season to be at the required levels of fitness as well as getting to know the team, training methods, style of play, etc.

No that rule has been abolished starting this season:

"Regarding the registration of players after a group stage of the UEFA Champions League and UEFA Europa League, a club may register three new eligible players without any restrictions. This is in line with the existing regulatory situation in the different domestic leagues, which does not impose restrictions on the eligibility for competitions of players registered for a new club during the winter transfer window."
