Well CL qualification is looking extremely unlikely. Naturally in general European qualification is what sides aim for. We have a proud European history and among the few with 3 plus European trophies.

However, we are in the middle of a rebuild. Our squad is disjointed and a season focusing purely on domestic competition could be great for us. Leicester after all won the league with no European football.

But what are the financial implications of no European football?

I quite enjoyed going to the Europa League games in Poch's early days. Its the competition where the likes of Kane, Rose, Bentaleb and Townsend came of age. It gave us Lamela's rabona and that last great game at the old Lane, with that win over Fiorentina.

As long as we used it in the same vein, I'm more than happy to go to them again. It also should be a winnable competition for us.

I always like European football, and I think the accrued time in various European competitions have been really good for the club. It would be weird to have a season with nothing.

Yeah, I'm good with just a season on the domestic front. Cash already sounds like it'll be at a premium and I'd much rather see a return to looking for some decent young players brought into the fold and built up again.

Without European football we'd struggle to keep a lot of our squad happy. Both through lack of playing time and not competing in Europe. There are two sides to that coin though, we could have a smaller squad with more consistency and less games / fatigue.

I think Europa League for a season would be good. As others already said it was where our last team came of age, and it might be a good stage for the next incarnation of the squad to gel. Players like Kane have performed at the highest level and it would be a good place to win games together, and maybe even win the trophy. Great boost for confidence all around.

Purely from a financial aspects it's important to get any sort of European football. So as much as Europa can be a drain I think it's important to try. But we won't get it imo. I see us mid table season's end.

Europa league pluses:

•Chance to realistically win something that would mean CL qualification.
•Financially a run to final could be worth £35-40m compared to £60-70m for CL last 16. A £30m hole in budget is nowhere near as bad as £70m.
• A season outside Europe would kill our coefficient which is now good and pot 2. If we go back to pot 3/4 it would make future CL groups very tough
• A chance for fringe and youth players to develop.
• Still get some great away days and a week between games for 9 months is a long time

Would prefer no Europa tbh. If we keep our best players for a season let's see how well we can do in the league- let's try to win it. Kane may get through the whole season and could probably score 35 league goals.

True enough about Kane. However a EL season could give us better bargaining power when signing a backup #9. We could say, “Prove yourself in the cups and EL and challenge Kane for his starting spot”. A bit more convincing than “we will play you in rotation with Kane and you can play 1st choice in the league cup against Newport”. Tongue in cheek obviously but could have some truth in it!?

I get all the arguments in favour of playing EL. But given our squad situation there is a strong part of me that thinks one season concentrating on domestic trophies with 10+ less games could be really beneficial.

This is a good point. As long as it’s one season I think our profile as a club, the lure of Mourinho and playing at the new stadium should cushion the blow for a while. I just want us to get an identity again and start winning consistently.

+ transfer targets probably (a bit) easier to get with Europe footy

No one would guarantuee us success if we are not in Europe at all.
I want to be in there and have some weekdays excitement.

Agree that it's a harder sell to a prospective striker, but less games and less travel means Kane and Son are more likely to stay fit anyhow. I'd also like to think we could still attract an old head like Giroud without European football.
