Manchester City's rival clubs could influence their ultimate Financial Fair Play fate, regardless of Uefa's decision to find them in breach of its cost-control measures.

As revealed by Telegraph Sport, City are expected to be informed this week that they will be punished for failing to adhere to FFP regulations.

Barring the improbable 11th-hour emergence of new data to back up their claims that they have met their obligations, City and Paris St-Germain are both facing a severe sanction by Uefa's Club Financial Control Body.

The CFCB's investigatory chamber is likely to write to them with what is known as a 'settlement' offer, a punishment which they can either accept or reject.

However, even if they agree to a sanction that includes a heavy fine or curbs on their ability to field new players, that may not be the end of the matter.

Indeed, built into Uefa's FFP regulations is the power for any innocent club directly affected by a sanction to challenge it if they deem it too lenient.

Those already in the clear - including Manchester United, Arsenal, Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur - and others competing for European qualification this season - Liverpool and Everton - are expected to be watching closely to ensure any punishment received by City fits the crime.

If any of the clubs are unhappy with a sanction, or a decision to clear City, they have 10 days from the publication of the CFCB's decision to lodge a complaint.

Teams which finish below City in the Premier League table would have most to gain from challenging a punishment if the Manchester club is spared expulsion from the Champions League.

Were Arsenal or Everton, for example, to finish fifth, they could benefit from any ban for City by replacing them in Europe's premier club competition.

Such disputed cases will be ruled on by the CFCB's adjudicatory chamber in mid-June, at the same time as it delivers its verdict on any club which has refused an offer of settlement.

Even that may not be the end of the story, with all parties having the right of appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport, which may not make its final rulings until the eve of the new season.

When asked about FFP, and a possible penalty, Pellegrini said: "First of all, it is important to know what Uefa will say and then we will have an opinion."

City's lawyers will tear an absolute hole into Uefa.

No chance.

Agree there's very little chance, one observation I'd make however.is that Utd, Arsenal, ourselves and indeed any big PL club complying with the regs can afford lawyers just as good and they also will tear a hole in UEFA if they are seen not to be applying their own laws to the letter.

This makes sense. We get 4th & don't qualify one year

Arsenal get 5th & do the next.

That would be about fucking standard for us.

God as if it couldn't get any worse. Don't see how we're likely to benefit from this at all, it will just strengthen our real rivals

It would be completely hypocritical for Chelsea to ask for it, of course.

Oh, please Mr Uefa, ban the bigger spenders than us.

But, as A&C says... Arsenal to get fifth if City get banned.

I can see the PL thinking hmmm we can make some money out of this and organise a 5th and 6th place CL playoff at Wembley which the scum will win 1-0 having seen hardly any of the ball, being pinned in their own half and being comprehensively outplayed....

If this does indeed happen then as others have pointed out we know for a fact it will be those wankers down the road Arsenal that benefit. We never ever get any sort of luck like that so not even remotely excited about this news.

So this season could actually get worse..:meh:
Wrong thread :D hahaha!!

More fitting for the how can this season get any worse.

Life of Spurs fan, lady fate doesn't just kick you in the balls, she rips them out and makes a smoothie with them, then gives them back with a cherry on top.
