We can't win on the cheap. Only 2 of the Fab 4 of 3 seasons ago remain. Erikson's gone and not been replaced. Deli is a shadow of himself. We have not shown any creativity for a year now, and if we continue on this path, both Harry and Sonny will be gone by season's end. As bad as our financial injection appears to be, the owners need to inject some cash to buy one or two creative players, even if they have to dig into their own pockets.

Toby looks a shell of his former self. Completely unrecognisable from 18-19. He’s never been the quickest but jeez-Louise when Richalison stripped him from Davies nightmare pass it was as though he was running in treacle.

It goes without saying Dele is another player who looks completely helpless. He’s never been the most ‘easy on the eye’ but today having watched that first half his general play is very awkward. The way he receives the ball is heavy, his first touch is always a fight to regain the ball and his passing is limited.

At this moment in time (and from the last 18 months) he offers nothing. The dele of old, smashing into Pogba while playing for England and slamming it in Hugo’s top hand corner looks a million years ago.

Sissoko is a tryer and works so hard. If there is one player I want to do well and will on its Sissoko, but he’s woeful, an anti-footballer. The finesse and craftsmanship of a bulldozer. Surely there’s a ‘type’ of game/fixture which Sissoko would suit (away to a top 4 whereby we pack the midfield), but at home to Everton when we’re chasing a goal, today was a nightmare. Such a mess anytime he try’s to link or combine anything going forward.

All that early season optimism...

Can someone help me with something. I have been going to watch spurs for 30 years, I have seen a lot of football. I like to think that I have a fair idea of how the game works, tactics, movement, formation, etc. That said, I am no football coach, and I certainly don't come close to knowing it all.

But what I just can't understand is just how devoid of, well, anything, this team is. I can't recall them putting more than 3 passes together without losing the ball, usually through an unforced error. I can't see any tactics at all, other than if they get possession on a turnover, then whomever has stolen the ball just runs and runs and runs for so long as they can before they lose possession. What I don't understand is what this manager is actually doing with the players - It is so bad and mystifying to me that I am wondering if I am just missing something obvious. This is not to mention the appalling attitude and work rate of the players.

So can someone enlighten me as to what this manager is, or is trying, to do? Because all I see is a group of players who appear to be on the pitch for the sake of making up the numbers. And I don't get it.

It’s very simple: the best players, the players that actually win things, have a winning mentality and desire to win that cannot be coached. Over the decades we’ve had a few such players; some went on to achieve success elsewhere, others stayed and arguably didn’t achieve all that they could have. Today, the players with this winning mentality are hard to come by and very, very expensive. Today we don’t have enough of them.

Any competent club would have gone for
All four should have been sold this summer

3/4 of our squad needs to be sold. Unfortunately ,it can't be done all at once so we're going to have to suck it up for the next couple of seasons. Jose was mad taking this job.

We cant even sell two of winks, sissoko, dele, lamela? Sell two from these four players( whoever club gives more money) and use that money on transfer market

Well done @Ordman for going back to 'wtf' a post of mine made at HT. How very brave of you.

Obviously the second half was a disgrace but that doesn't change what we saw at HT.

I am constantly amazed by how many people get their panties in a bunch over a fat-fingered reaction! Happy to remove it once I find it.

The negativity isn't just based on the opening match though. All signs since last season point to us going back to mid-table shit in a billion pound stadium. Embarrassing.

Spurs fans deserve better, been mosty shit since the 1980s despite massive support. Redknapp and Poch made us believe again, Mourinho has brought it back to shit.
Last season he had us 4th based on points from when he came in, despite huge injury problems. I expect us to be doing better than that to be honest, but I don't see any evidence that we're headed for mid-table beyond literally just the opening match.

On top of all the others from the past year. You want to pretty much entirely replace the squad which reached the UCL final. It's ridiculous. We've made more than enough transfers. But much of the money has been spent unwisely.
It’s a joke calm

Were so bad right now I think we need to go 433 and have a designated 'sitter' in front of the back 4.

It would mean sacrificing the 'Second striker/ no10' but let's face it whoever's plays there is struggling to do anything.

I actually felt we should have signed him alongside Hojbjerg because then you have a very solid base.

Hojbjerg alone was never going to be enough because at the end of the day you need a box to box mid alongside him, which Winks isn't and Sissoko lacks the quality.

Ndombele could do it but needs to improve massively and you'd prefer Lo Celso further forward.

Even if Ndombele does improve we are very light in that position.

I'd rather go into games knowing that we'll be fine in the centre no matter what.

Forget Bale and a LB now. Put all that money towards a box to box midfielder who has a little creativity.

Doucoure is a much better player than PEH and have more in his locker.

Just to add to my earlier post. Them scoring so early in the second half allowed them to play the way we ideally want to play - sit deep and counter attack. A JM team suffers if it goes behind first as his tactics is to draw them on and hit them in the CA. Going behind makes this impossible and unfortunately we do not have enough creativity in the side to break down a resolute low block. Also it should be noted that compared to JM teams of the past(esp Chelsea and Inter) we do not have a tough or resolute enough defense or DM to ensure we do not go behind first.
I think it says a lot about the underlying character of Tottenham(not just this current squad) that this is the first time HM had ever lost an opening fixture. As we saw years ago with George Graham even the most experienced defensive minded coaches cannot instill in a Tottenham team a resolute hard to breakdown, hard to breach defensive ethos. We are Tottenham defending doesn’t come naturally to us - it’s why we haven’t won as many trophies as our play and players over the years merited. Stylish forward players can always win you games but solid defenses win you titles.

I can definitely see the system and a change in the side post Poch, it's super duper shit but I see it .

11 men behind the Ball, try to be compact, give up possession, and counter the team win its won back with a right sided overlap

Well we certainly don‘t have a team capable of doing much else. Defence splitting passes? Nope. Wingers capable of terrifying fullbacks? Nope. Kane and Son on the counter is about all that we have.

Its anger directed at the team, manager etc over not just one game but many stemming from last season, a point you happen not to want to realise. When in your opinion is criticism warranted? How bad does it have to get before one is allowed to voice a negative opinion?

1 game for Højbjerg, hes "shit", its embarrassing man, 1 fucking game. I heard similar comments with Doherty, even fans saying we should sell Kane..... *hes not the player of old* Embarrassing, self serving, social media driven wankers. 1 game of a new season, sorry, its just ****ish IMO. You can nearly hear the glee as their armchair punditry bullshit is being realised, cant get on board with that mentality at all. I will happily call the performance shit but i will keep my powder dry till i see how it unfolds.

That was abysmal. We need a top quality CB & CM. Also need Reguilon.

I do think Levy will splash some cash. The problem is we'll probably leave it very late so any new signings would not play before gw 5-6 earliest and we need something now.

I have definitely noticed a herd mentality on that more in recent weeks than ever before on SC. I see a post with a couple of negative reps, dont think the post is anything too ridiculous, come back an hour later and that poster has loads on that post. I suspect it is the same posters neg repping the same poster time and again because they don’t like them for whatever reason.

No. I have no idea. Sadly, it appears that the players don't either.

spare a thought for us left handed people. I was once scrolling through my Facebook feed one day and there was a picture that one of my friends had either liked or commented on but it had come up on my news feed. (The persons photos wasn’t a friend of mine)The unfortunate thing was it was a picture of their half naked topless 7 year old. As I was moving the page down with my left thumb it hit the like button, in my panic of the content of the pic I quickly hit the like button again to remove it, problem was that it didn’t do anything so I hit it again and again and again and so on till it eventually Took the like on then off then on about 6 times. Sometimes it’s shite being a lefty

That was painful to watch. I was a bit surprised that he did not try to drop deeper once it was clear that he would not get to the ball first. Still good that he did not take a red card, which he would have received if he would have tried to tackle Richarlison.

I thought we were ok until the half time sub. Then we were pure shit.

Not rocket science we take off our only midfielder who can actually pass the ball (winks) and we had no creativity. We didn't press as a team and as they have quality on the ball they just passed through us. Dele was a nuisance and without him they were more relaxed and could pass through us.

Their midfield is exactly what we needed, we should have signed them all.

Positive note, Everton look bloody good and could challenge for top 4 imo. Jose has to take the blame for this, no shape, no flow, no midfield.
