We are not playing 3atb btw it’s just what we did under Jose most games, 4-4-2 OOP and lopsided 4-2-3-1 in possession so yea the RB is basically a RWB in this system but it’s not actually a 3atb formation so to speak if that makes sense.
Yep, agreed. Pretty clearly a 4-4-2/4-4-1-1 when out of possession and when we have it, depending on the build up phase it's an asymmetrical 4-2-3-1 with Lucas tucking in and Gedson providing the width. Doesn't look anything a 3atb imo simply because when there's an opposrtunity to do so, Davies is actually staying wide and getting forward. He's just a lot more cautious than Gedson on the other side.

Yea you’re spot on mate. I think even the most ardent Jose haters would’ve even enjoyed that, much crisper stuff. Sissoko has his uses especially in big games where we need his physicality and power but in games like this where we need to dominate and create having 2 CM’s who can pass is a game changer.

it also makes me really hope ndombele sorts himself out or we move him on ASAP and get another CM in as with the amount of games we have we can’t just rely on hoyjbjerg winks and Sissoko.
Ironically the So'ton fans think his passing is the weakest part of his game yet he already looks miles more comfortable knocking it about than Sissoko. He also doesn't take 3 or 4 touches every time he gets the ball and completely butcher the flow of our passing game like Sissoko does.

First half impressions
-Press looked ok, slightly disjointed at times (just to start the game)
-the 442 formation looks like it might be what we continue to use
-Dele looks like he has a fire under his ass and is moving the ball quicker than last year (positive)
-Gedson looks pretty good (although not tested defensively)
-Hojbjerg hasn't really had to do anything
-Winks looks good and drops super deep while we attack as cover
-Foyth great pass to Son but had one or two passing errors which against better opposition could've been a problem
-Davies doing what he does
-Sessegnon, decent goal kinda miss hit it but hey it went in/kinda struggled to get into the game and decision making seemed kinda slow
-A lot of positives to take from that first half, hope I get to see some youngsters I've never heard of get on the pitch for the second half

Liking the 343. Makes sense that we would have Gedson and Sissoko who could play the right wing back well, with Sessegnon and ?? On other side. Foyt has really Impresses me, he did before he went out on loan, he is a tidy defender. Yes he can make the odd the mistake, but he is only 21.

Hojbjerg looks strong and can see what he has been bought for already. Only 45 mins against a poor Ipswich team in pre-season, so not getting carried away, but we do look sharpe.

Yep 100% this. But I can see how others might be a bit confused and see it as a 3atb formation

Bent had an incredible preseason that year. What a goal machine. I think he got an England call up on the back of his preseason form.
Yep he got 13 goals in 7 games. Our preseason was 7W 1D 0L and 33 goals in 8 games. A lot of optimism that preseason!

I remember my dad left the country full of optimism, having just watched the roma game and didnt watch us play until the wigan 0-0, and I remember telling him that we were actually playing a little better than we had most of the season and him being gobsmacked by how bad we were.

Glad to see Foyth getting a game, bit rusty but does play some lovely passes out of defense (that neither Sanchez or Dier would be capable of). Reminds me of Alan Hansen (when he was playing not as a pundit). Imo it would be a massive mistake to sell him.

How do I watch this match, I am a member

You needed to have got your free access code before the deadline, then log in with that. If you didn't get one you need to pay for the matches now, unless theres a VPN workaround

Yea with a manager who didn’t speak English and when we’d just sold our best strikers. Bentley had a stormer against Roma from what I remember and Darren bent mabye?
My overriding memory of that game was Philippe Mexes being an utter ****.

You see that's what I thought and was going to post that, but I saw a typical classical three man defense. Davies has been going up, but not from the width but from a typical roaming CB in a 3 man defence. I mean formations are flexible, I get that, but it's what I see. A very compressed front three, with two very wide very forward wing backs, with little defensive responsibility, a deep double pivot midfield and a back three. But there you go.
