From the FA website.....

HANDLING THE BALL

Handling the ball involves a deliberate act of a player making contact with the ball with the hand or arm.

The following must be considered:
  • the movement of the hand towards the ball (not the ball towards the hand)
  • the distance between the opponent and the ball (unexpected ball)
  • the position of the hand does not necessarily mean that there is an offence
  • touching the ball with an object held in the hand (clothing, shinguard, etc.) is an offence
  • hitting the ball with a thrown object (boot, shinguard, etc.) is an offence
The goalkeeper has the same restrictions on handling the ball as any other player outside the penalty area. Inside their penalty area, the goalkeeper cannot be guilty of a handling offence incurring a direct free kick or any related sanction but can be guilty of handling offences that incur an indirect free kick

Why are there different handball rules for different competitions?

The law places the responsibility of what constitutes deliberate handball on the referee and the linesmen.

David Elleray: "Referees look at two specifics - did the hand or arm go towards the ball or in a manner which would block the ball, or is the hand in a position where it would not normally be? ...The challenging decisions are if the defending player spreads their arms to make themselves bigger. ...If the ball hits the arm then the referee must decide whether this action was to deliberately block the ball or whether the player has raised their arms to protect themselves - especially if the ball is hit at speed."

Sissoko's arm was raised in an unnatural position and it wasn't to protect himself, therefore, the referee was correct to award a penalty.

I think already we need a sub. We are doing stupid mistakes and fiddling too much.

Too many backward passes and not a lot of positiveness from us. But that pretty much sums up our style most of the season. What we do know is that we often play like this in a match and then wake up at some point. The key for us here is not to be 2 or 3 down when we finally decide to play positive attacking football versus keeping the ball for the sake of possession stats.

I can understand those types of soft handball pens being given when it's stopping a shot being directed towards the goal but if I remember correctly, the ball was going out of the penalty area which would never have directly led to a goal. If they want to penalize those sort of offences, maybe it should be free kick instead? A penalty is so out of proportion to that offence imo.

Wasnt he abit shit against Ajax..then the 95th minute happened and that assist. Not saying you are wrong but he has something in his locker that most other players dont, the ability to turn a game on its head in a second.
