Dier and Sanchez did really well again tonight. Antonio is the type of striker that Sanchez struggles against so it was odd he kept going on Dier’s side who marshalled him well. Dull first half but played well once we scored.
It will get lost in the other comments but dier was organising and telling sanchez to be a dick to Antonio. I loved that a lot. Thank you for highlighting it

We have got to start playing Ndombele..

And this match reminds us we need to have a back up striker to ensure Kane longevity.. we can't burn Kane to the ground every single game..
Ndombele hasn’t earned his place yet, he was awful against Chelsea and Burnley and needs to earn his place.

Although we need a backup striker, kane only played 90min as we have 9 days without a game now

He did great, as did Sanchez. Antonio (who usually wrecks our defenders) had nothing all game.

This. They also kept Martial, Rashford, Fernandes and Pogba quiet on Friday.

If it weren’t for conceding that sloppy penalty I think we’d all be talking about things very differently right now.

(Except the people who have a weekly cry in the Poch thread, obviously. But they’re mental)

After 20 mins there was only one team that looked like winning it. For the sheer dominance of ball and territory I thought we'd eventually get the break through.

The second goal was a rapid and efficient counter attack - the thing we have seen a most definite change and work on since Mourinho came in. In this aspect he is comfortable drilling his team and I don't have any worries that over time we will see more efficiency and quality and score plenty of goals in this manner.

Though chances came here and there, in general I thought the overall play against a side sitting back and defending deep was pretty unconvincing. This was a problem under Poch, it is an inheritance that Mourinho has to solve as we will face plenty of this and not always have matches with plenty of counter/transition opportunities. Too many of our players are just not comfortable in how to break teams down, manipulate the ball and create space, and operate in tight spaces with quality. Tactically there needs to be nuances to have a bit more direction in how we're going about our work and exposing weaknesses in the opposition. This will be the biggest challenge for him I suspect.

Fairly routine win in the end, nice to get three points after what feels like an eternity. On to the next one...

Job done. Regarding Ndombele, with the whole squad lacking match fitness, just don't think Mourinho trusts him to dig in and put a shift in during these first few games where the players have to dig in. Really want him to come good as the talent is clear to see but losing hope that is going to happen under Mourinho.

Some very good performances out there today.
Dier, Davies, Gio, Stevie (briefly), Lamela (again briefly) and Aurier.
Thought Sissoko did well in a defensive way but some of his passing was a bit dodge. Davinson did well too, highlighted by the fact that I don't recall him getting a single mention in this thread. ?
Thought it was a decent team performance and beginning to look much more organised.

They need to fuck up about that handball - you can't tell if it hits his arm or not.

Why every single goal is checked when it was brought in for "clear and obvious" errors. Clearly that wasn't clear and obvious as it's took people watching it 10 times to try and work something out.

Good performance overall after a bit of a slow start. We've started to look more like a coached unit these last couple of games.

We also need attackers that can make better decisions and not be flat footed in and around the box.

People consistently leave out that bit when criticising Aurier and any other full back.

Valid point, but I think some of that is down to Aurier’s unpredictability
