I know I posted in the U21 thread that I wasn't sure what to make of it but thinking about it more could we be looking to get our young players loans overseas as we see that as a better development route than loans to lower league clubs?

While I agree that this position could be a good fit for Freund, does anyone else think it sounds a bit like a demotion?

I remember there being suggestions that he was marginalised somewhat by AVB and now it looks suspiciously like Pochettino doesn't particularly want or need him around the first team either. Is it fair to wonder if he doesn't fit in all that well with other coaches or am I reading more into this than is really there?

Either way, a return to youth coaching and scouting doesn't look like a step up from first-team involvement to me.

It seems to me like a bullshit role. Poch doesn't want him around and Spurs don't want to sack him for whatever reason.

Just sounds like he is surplus to requirements on the training field, but that Levy has a soft spot for him.

@pokeefe1 For all the stick he gets, the way Levy has gone out of his way to look after Freund in the last 18 months is brilliant

  2. @gstobart You don't question why? The only man to survive the reign of AVB (as if AVB wanted him?) and Sherwood. Eyes and ears. That's all

@pokeefe1 He suffered personal tragedy and they wanted to look after him. Top bloke and loves spurs too.

Does anyone know what happened to Freund? (other than having to work under Sherwood....)

I just wanna see him go nuts in the dugout when we score a goal, we won't see that as much now :(

Love you Steffen.

In regards to the coaching set up, I think it is a sound idea to leave that to Mauricio and his team, who have worked together for many years and clearly have a well established philosophy and set up. Perhaps, Steffen was redundant on the training pitch.

But, he clearly loves the club, and international development and scouting, seems to be a direction the club want to focus on. Along with Brad's ambassadorial work overseas, I think they're simply using people already on the payroll to do the work.

His pre-match tactical give-aways will be missed (not that poch would have allowed them). :D

Love that we've kept him on and given him a job for the foreseeable future. Great guy.

Sounds very much like he was surplus to Poch's requirements and they've created a role for him. Hopefully he can spend most of his time at the German FA's training centre, and nick all their young youth prospects!

Poch will have his team but people dont seem to appreciate the importance of good coaching at a youth level. We now have Leadley with the young kids, Ugo (a very respected coach) then taking them to the brink of the first team with Steffan overlooking the whole setup and ensuring that our kids get the best opportunities to play and gain experience (and he has experience with youth football from his time with Germany). I think this all looks good. It may be a step sideways for him to come away from the first team but since AVBs first year he's been on the edge with it looking like he has little influence anyway. This should give a better line of sight for Levy to the youth players in terms of potential returns and if he does a good job then you could see him replace Poch in years to come ala Pep etc.

Truth is i dont think the coaching setup is as simple as "if you are first team you are better than the rest" the club looks at player development from 8 to 38 and has to ensure that the lads are getting the right coaching all the way through. It wouldn't suprise me to see SF on the touchline from time to time or for him to be involved in coaching sessions - his role should give him visability to all ages in the squads. Personally i'd rather he was at the club and being of use rather than just a cheer leader!

Considering he has done good work with young players before he came here i think the job is perfect for him.

On 1 September 2007, Freund was appointed assistant head-coach of the German U-20 team. On 5 December 2007, he was named as a new assistant to Nigeria coach Berti Vogts for the time of the African Nations Cup. He then resumed his work as assistant to German U20-manager Frank Engel. In May 2009 he finished his coaching badges and on 17 July 2009 he was appointed manager of the German U-16 team signing a two-year contract. A year later he began managing the German U-17 team leading them to a runners up medal at the 2011 UEFA European U-17 Football Championship and a third place at the World Cup in Mexico. He then started working with the new generation of U-16 players. On 11 July 2012, Freund was appointed assistant head coach of Tottenham Hotspur.[2]

I think when you have a young manager like Poch or AVB they need to have their people in working with them and not someone put apon them. Its different say to a Ferguson or a Van Gal who knows the job inside out, and can pass things on to a younger manager/ coach like Freund. I am glad he is still at the club.

There's a sense here that we're doing Steffen a favour, but prior to coming to us he had important roles in the German youth set-up at a time they were really revolutionising how they were doing things. We can see all that coming to fruition now. I think there's more to him than some might give him credit for!

Only thing though, since he came back to us I have been hoping we might sign one of his German kids from the youth teams in 2010-11..... never seemed to happen though

I really hope he makes a fantastic impact for the club in this position.

I know it could be seen as a demotion but if Mo-Po doesn't need him as his assistant manager, I can't think of a more fitting role for him that will benefit Spurs.

I don't know, sounds like the perfect job for Freund.

He knows his football, loves the club which will show from a business side.

I think this is great news and he gets to remain with us for a long long time, promoting the club he loves to an international audience.
