I have already written this off as a transitional season. No point persevering with players who are not going to be here next season when they are not firing on all cylinders. We need to assess what we have and what we need. Reinstate Dier in the role that suits him best: as a shield in front of the back four, dropping back to form a three so the fullbacks can push up. Stop pretending Winks is a holding midfield player, and see if he can influence the game more further forward. Davies is not a wingback, but he is a good defender, try him at left centreback. Give KWP a run and see if he steps up.

Lloris
KWP Sanchez Davies Rose*
Dier
Sissoko Winks
Lamela Lucas
Kane

* Only because Sessangon is injured.

Subs: Gazzaniga, Foyth, Skipp, Ndombele, Son and I guess Toby/Verts and Eriksen (no sure Dele warrants a place on the bench at the moment).

First Sanchez at RB Now Sissoko, if Foyth is fit i dont get why we dont play him, We will miss Sissoko's energy in midfield, KWP frozen out as we all knew he would be & Aurier is an accident waiting to happen, looks like RB will be the issue once again this season

Question: how does this give us more steel than the diamond? Is it simply because Lucas and Son will be expected to track back?

Because it has someone who actually plays as a specialist defensive midfielder. Dier holds and breaks up play. Sissoko breaks with his powerful runs and Ndombele breaks lines with his passing as he did first half against Bayern. Son and Lucas give us pace on the break and Harry up top as the target man where he works best

It's going to be Sissoko at RB and Wanyama in at cm isn't it...

Lloris
KWP Toby Verts davies
Winks Dier
Lamela Eriksen moura
Kane
Back to a 4231 formation. Rest for Ndombele. Sissoko maybe in for KWP, but would rather give KWP the chance.

Lamela and Moura should be fresh.

Kwp. . Foyth. Sanchez. Davies
Ndombele. sissoko
Moura. Lamela. Son
Kane

Width to come from moura and son not the defenders. allowing ndombele to break through the middle with sissoko holding.
Sissoko does not have the attacking vision we need going forward which ndombele has so should be the anchor.

Also shows the defence they are not untouchable after the heavy defeat. I would change Gaz in goal but lloris as captain and all that. Unless he gives the mantle to kane for the game who would be a true outfield captain

The game is a conundrum
Brighton are not. B M We played well against B M for 35 mins so the same performance imo would produce a better return than 1 goal
Are we looking to win and show we can play the diamond or show the world the defeat was very damaging to the clubs and retreat into a shell
The biggest requirement is to match and surpass Brighton’s commitment

I would a steady 4231 for at least the first half then move up a gear in the second by moving to a more diamond type shape. We don’t need to kill ourselves too early

I would start with

Lloris
KWP Sanchez Vertonghen Davies
Dier Sissoko ( although he is the best fit for the formation but his effort deserved reward)
Son NDombele Lamela
Kane

Second half given no injuries would see Winks and Moura play replacing anybody not at the races

As long as their is no diamond I'm not too concerned with the line-up. Let's go back to what worked best for this squad, a 4-2-3-1 formation with our best performing players on the pitch.

Dier deserves a run and Sissoko will slot in seemlessly into the RB position. He spent half the season there last season anyway covering for Trippier/Aurier during games so its not unfamiliar territory for him and he has all the attributes to put in a decent shift there.

I wouldn't be adverse to KWP getting a start either. He has been underwhelming but he is developing too,he just needs to grab the opportunity by the scruff and run with it.

I’d also go with a 3-4-3, but I’d put Davies CB on the left and Rose out on the wing. I fully acknowledge Rose hasn’t been great of late but with three at the back he won’t have as much pressure on him as a defender.

I’d put Dier and Ndombele in the middle, Sissoko at right wingback, with Kane and Sonny up top with Lamela in the hole. That actually underutilises Sissoko a little, because his strength won’t be used quite as effectively, but needs must.

That would hopefully give us some width and Dier can be on hand both to try and break up play if it comes through the middle, but also slot back into defence if the CBs spread to cover the wings.

Lamela in the hole to link up with Ndombele to move the ball forward when needed while both can also feed the forwards from their relative positions if needed. Lamela’s harrying of the opposition would also help to win back possession.

I’d also keep Kane a little deeper than Sonny and let him hunt the ball if he wants. Keep Son up top to pounce on any balls over the top or switches of play where he can use his pace to open up the box.
That would be a very clunky team. I would rather have 2 Ball players in cm if we are playing a back 3

I've been saying this for a while, Sissoko is the best option at right back we have right now. Foyth undoubtedly has potential but is unproven in the EPL. Also, by playing Sissoko at RB we might find that it gives the side better balance overall. Here's the line up I think we should go with against brighton, bearing in mind form and how brittle we've looked defensively of late......

Lloris
Sissoko Toby Sanchez Davies
Dier Winkerbele
Son Lamela Ndombele
Kane
