I dont think going narrow giving their fullbacks the freedom to roam wherever they want is a particularly good idea.

Depends. If you are 4 vs. 3 centrally to deal with the crosses you got a fair shot clearing your lines in my opinion.

Not that our CDs are Terry-like when it comes to dealing with crosses.

Doesn´t matter to me - unless Liverpool for some reason do not show up (comparable to us away to Brighton), we will lose regardless. Boro are closer to us than we are to Liverpool at the moment.

I look forward to what formation we go with. I suspect Jose will at least be thinking tactically which may be more defensive which is fine for me as we cannot go all out on the attack against them as they will counter easily

It's a shame as I think we are missing 4 of our main players in Lloris, Davies/Rose and Kane, N'Dombele but there we go.

As much as I don't rate him, I think Dier has to play, but I am really struggling with a formation!

Something perhaps like:

--------------Gazza
Aurier, Toby, Sanchez, Verts
----------------Dier
Lamela, Winks, Lo Celso, Sess
----------------Son

Subs:
Vorm, Tanganga, Foyth, Alli, Eriksen, Moura Parrott

I would choose Sess over Alli purely on ball retention (Alli can give up possession too easily through flicks etc) and defensive-mindedness. I think Sess is also more likely to track his man than Alli.

Lamela over Moura for me for ball retention, pressing off the ball and his work ethic.

Dier as a shield in front of a back 4 which currently picks itself. Dier of old used to slip into the back when the full backs went forward. We almost in my mind need to keep an eye on that should Aurier in particular venture forward. Dier needs to be biased a little to the right but needs to be able to sweep across as Salah will be up against Verts and make himself available to take the ball from the defence. Dier does not need to do anything elaborate with the ball in my mind but at least pass it forward to Lo Celso and Winks rather than doing lots of triangles with Sanchez and Toby or launching it long.

Winks and Lo Celso both comfortable on the ball and both have energy to chase the opposition down. Lo Celso in particular is happy to stick his foot in but also has that creative ability. They need to be central a lot of the time imo to compact midfield.

Son is going to have to work his arse off across the line to be honest but he is mor Ethan capable of giving the centre backs a hard time running with the ball as well as working the flanks on the counter.

I don't think with Jose's preference in certain players I.e Moura, Alli and Eriksen that is what we will see if I am truthful. Interesting times though.

I think we need to revert 100% back to the way of playing for the first matches under Mourinho, not care about whether we look horrible at the back and hope we can outscore them.

Gazzaniga,
Aurier, Sanches, Alderweireld, Vertonghen,
Dier, Eriksen
Lamela, Dele, Son
Lucas

My concern with this is that Lucas would be fairly blunt up front on his own. He is not a striker imo and coughs up possession too often. Same goes for Alli as well.

We need to play a low block, and we need to have fullbacks who can turn and wingers who we can trust doing their work endlessly against Trent and Robertson. Ndombele would be so important because he can easily get us out of Liverpools first press in midfield, but he’s out I guess. I’d go:

4-2-3-1: Gazzaniga - Aurier, Sanchez, Alderweireld, Sessegnon - Dier, Winks - Lo Celso, Son, Lamela - Lucas.

Subs: Vorm, Foyth, Vertonghen, Skipp, Dele, Eriksen, Parrott.

Love Dele but I don’t see this game playing out to his strength. Want Lucas and Son for counters, Lo Celso and Lamela is smart players and good in transition, not least with picking a pass. Just for us to hope Dier can close the gap between our two lines and that Winks is healthy.

Yeah, well I dunno. I think that important key is to use as many players in their best or almost best position as possible, rather than the constant shoehorning that we've been witnessing for major part of 2019. So for instance you can have Son on top (almost best position), and but Lucas on the left (not really best position at all). Or have Son on the left (best position) and Lucas as striker (almost best position).

Gazzaniga
Alderweireld - Sanchez - Diop
Aarons - Lo Celso - Ndombele - Soumare - Sessegnon
Piatek - Son
Should do it, I reckon.

As long as we play Sess, Son and Moura up front and play pacy counter attacking football, I’ll be happy...

Gazzaniga
Sanchez Toby Foyth
Aurier LoCelso Eriksen Sessegnon
Lamela Alli
Son

Actually I’m changing my mind and opting for a back 4. I reckon we’ll look to counter with pace so we need speed up front and some creativity in the middle.

Gazzaniga
Aurier Toby Sanchez Sessegnon
Lo Celso Dier Eriksen
Lucas Lamela Son

Vertonghen can’t play at left back or he’ll get torn apart against salah, and I’d have Sanchez at centre back as I think we’ll need his pace at the back.

I’m hoping Lo Celso and Eriksen can provide much needed creativity, Dier to provide balance to our midfield.

Use Lucas and Son’s speed to create 1v1 situations with their fullbacks who are great going forward and might get caught out of position since they play so high up the pitch.

I’d like to see Lamela play in that False 9 role, similarly to what Firmino does for Liverpool, press their defenders and force them into making mistakes whilst also winning fouls up the pitch which will help us control the tempo.

Come on Spurs, hopefully we’ll get an improved performance!

Won't happen but it's a 5-3-2 for me all day long

Foyth Toby Sanch Vert Sess
Lamela Dier Dele
Moura Son

Whoever we put at RB is going to get targeted but I just think Aurier has had enough chances and KWP is injured. Tough call between Dele and CE but Dele wins it on mobility and he wants to be here !

Try to soak up the pressure with Son and Moura on the edge of the centre circle waiting for a hoof over th...er...a long pass up front

I would like to play Lo Celso but I just think we need at least 2 defensive minded players in the middle + Dele more used to the rough and tumble of a game like this
