It just feels weird defending him all the time, it's a bit lazy to say he's a shadow of his former self when his record still stacks (and betters) nearly all of his teammates in both formats. It just feels like every time he's batting and doesn't score a boundary off every ball it's a copy and paste of "Root needs some time out as he's regressed so much".

Another great stat from bbc, since 2017 he's the leading test run scorer and 2nd in ODI for England. He's had an average few months in what is ridiculous times. Just doesn't need to be said in my opinion.

Buttler has scored 1 & 3 in this ODI series, are we saying he's regressed since that 100 against Pakistan?

Not saying that at all. Root isn't that type of player and your right his odi record is exceptional and maybe im being a tad harsh on him today.
Its only in the past year which he hasn't had the best of times odi wise

I guess the problem with Root is the expectation on him is so high due to how excellent he was at start of his career and before he took on the test captancy.

His stats over past 2 years back up certainly test wise that his batting is regressing with one century in nearly two years with a next best score of 77 with a still very healthy test average but one that is going in wrong direction.

I personally do think over the past 9 months or so he does look shadow of his former self and lacking in confidence when he comes out in both forms of the game.

Looks like after this game he will be getting an extended rest again as cant see them touring India and Sri Lanka this winter given the covid situation in both these countries. Hopefully this will do him some good and help him work on his game and rebuild some confidence for next summer and next winters ashes. As no doubt we need a Joe Root scoring runs in both ODI and test teams.

I love watching cricket but I'm not a purist, I couldn't tell you the difference between off side and legg side or silly point but I know not to bowl rashid last over.

Game of inches. If Archer's 3 inches further back and doesn't no ball, Carey's out early on, and England win easy. Whether Rashid bowls the final over or not.
Horrible result, but a great game of cricket again.

What happened before is irrelevant. Shocking decision. Morgan being too clever and arrogant for his own good!

Very entertaining but think England made too many errors collectively. Not reviewing the caught behind, Archer dropped catch early and then getting Carey off a no ball. Morgan’s biggest mistake was bowling Root for too long, should have been off after the two wickets and Rashid on a lot earlier.

Rashid bowling the last over over Curran...meh could see the logic with two new lower order batsmen, Rashid bowled rubbish tonight.

Have to say the short boundary on one side made the game a bit of a lottery and was a bit rubbish for international cricket but same for both sides.

Labuschagne is a ****.

100% agree re Roots bowling. Nice of us to play the Aussies in by bowling friggin Root far far too many overs

Yeah exactly, Maxwell and Carey can play spin and it just didn’t make sense. Weird to not be able to blame Root for bowling himself for too long for once.

We really contrived to hand them that one.

What with aAcher's no ball Buttler's simple shelling of Maxwell then the bizarre decision by Morgan to give Rashid the final over. We deserved what we got.

Not often I criticise Cpt Morgan but he properly dropped one with Rashid, you could see he wasn’t at the races after his second over.
Shouldn’t have lost that under lights having posted 300.

A nice comfortable series win for England although for a while I thought Australia would get there but breaking that partnership pretty much sealed the win by 21 runs. In the end it didn't matter who bowled the final over, they were left with too much to do.

Fair play to the aussies for coming over and giving us some cricket to watch.

Only really like the 4 day County and 5 day Test set-up but this format
does what it says on the tin. Single day result close finishes and excitement
and an approximation to the real thing
Anything shorter is not really cricket chaps.
Australia nearly let us off the hook but I think talent and form got them over the line
(And all without Smith).

I hate the 20/20 stuff and I’m not a massive fan of the 50 over stuff

For me the old Sunday league stuff 40 overs per side, 8 per bowler was and is the best format for 1 day cricket. Don’t get me started on power plays!!

Professional cricket is and always should be judged on Test Match cricket. Nothing else compares
