We have been proactive and no doubt will continue to be. N'Jie, N'Koudou and Janssen were all proactive buys, as was Alli. Some work out and some don't. The problem is the risk-reward ratio. Can we afford to spend £30-40m on a player who might make it or do we continue to spend £10-15m on these players?

You can get the occasional gem. Bayern spent (up to) $20m on Alphonso Davies from the Vancouver Whitecaps and he looks like he will be a hell of a player, but there is no guarantee. Instincts - and performance in lower-quality leagues - don't always deliver success.

You’re right of course in terms of almost guaranteed success, but as you say it comes down to risk. If we continue to be too risk averse it will work against us anyway as players soon become our of our range very quickly.

The “pro active buys” you list ( and I’m not sure I’d describe them as proactive in the sense that I meant) were of the £10-15m level and were all duds. At least in terms of the quality we needed.

And the days of getting an Ali for £5m etc are dead.

It’s a different landscape now ( and has been for a few years), whether Levy/Lewis like it or not.

Not dead. Sancho went to dortmund for £8m.

So let's spend the Eriksen and Toby cash on Ndombele.
That’s probably the best way to approach this issue. We’ve been linked to Sander Berge (a DM), so Dier moves back to CB as Toby replacement. The 4121 formation of late with Dele behind the strikers means a player like N’Dombele becomes a more natural fit in the role Eriksen occupies in this formation. The itk suggests there is interest in both Berge and N’Dombele, and we’re going to need to shift the way we play somewhat if Eriksen does go because we’re not simply replacing him like for like

Usually when you buy something the cost is quite important.

Of course it is, but if every other PL are paying massive fees to get players to bring them to the next level we are going to have to bite the bullet eventually. Our transfer record is 30 mill Sissoko no? Compare that to the rest of the league. Not saying we need to throw money around, but if we are only a player or two away and I feel like most we have been for the last 2-3 seasons get them in. From I see we need to be more decisive in the market.

It's £42m for Davinson Sanchez, but I agree with your general point.

Why are people on here presuming Eriksen is off just because he hasnt signed his contract yet ?

Absolutely ridiculous.

Because turning down numerous new contract offers and running your deal down to its final year to take any power over your future away from your employer is what you do when you intend to leave a club.

Still got a year and a half left on his contract.
But according to many thats means it off.
Im confident he will sign a new one soon.
We shall see.
