Because we have players we HAVE to shift before we get him in. All of our midfielders (of similar quality to MS) are on wages of atleast 50k a week i'd imagine. (minus bentaleb)

Thats potentially over 200k a week on wages. Now Who sits out and picks that massive paycheck up for doing sod all?

Err..... Lennon did it last season. And that was whilst he was in the starting 11.

The continued ignorance at the complexities of transfers is frankly, ridiculous on here.

"But Liverpool bought someone dead easy and Everton signed a guy, Why is it that we're shit at this? It's not fair! It's a joke. A disgrace. An abomination! Levy out! Baldini out!"

I'm sure the club is trying. And we know they can be a bit tight, but good. They have to be. Our stadium holds half of Man Utds, is dwarfed by Liverpool's, Newcastle's, City's, Arsenal's. This is a reality. Southampton want nearly 30 million for MS. They can fuck right off!

Until we have a stadium that rivals these clubs we should apparently be spending the same amount of money as, this is our reality.

The stadium bit is absolute bollox, sick of reading this as a excuse, we have signed top players without a shiny new stadium, and we have signed players early in the window on previous occasions.

Arsenal we're still at Highbury when they made fantastic signings and early, if anything they took a step back when they built a new stadium...Liverpool haven't got a shiny new stadium and yet they signed early previously with quality even before there new owners, and this window of the back of Suarez, we did the same with bale, but we just used a scatter gun approach without targetting a direct replacement, or signing players to cover rb and LB and modric, vdv.

The stadium has fuck all to do with it, it's the approach to buying the players that's the problem.

Do you think any of our current midfielders would do the cm job in poch's system aswell as MS?

I do agree though we need to shift some players out to make room for MS & MM.

Just because you don't like reading the excuse over and over, doesn't mean it isn't valid. Look at the post above where a poster kindly points out how Liverpool's commerical earnings more than double ours. Liverpool don't need a "shiny new stadium" to generate considerably more money than us.

Arsenal made fantastic signings early at Hignbury - indeed they did. THEY WERE THE LEAGUE CHAMPIONS half the time! They could afford it and had regular CL football.

Our approach to replacing Bale was, in hindsight a little scatter gun. But what do you want? Decide.

Do you want us to fuck money around the place again like last year, or do you want us to target a few players upon our manager's insistence and try to secure them. And as for a direct replacement for Bale. There isn't a player in world football who is a direct replacement for Bale who we could even dream of affording. I, for one would not be happy seeing close to 30 million spunked on MS. We wouldn't get half of that back when we went to sell him. Why? Because he isn't worth it and we don't generate enough money as a club to afford it.

It's fine that you want a lovely new signing, we all do, but the club are right to not get ripped off. And the stadium, has everything and is central to that. It has literally, everything to do with it. Just because you don't like that fact, doesn't make it any less a reality.

To fit both in, we would need to sell/loan a minimum of 3 players above 21, of which 1 must be a non-home grown player.

Take 'stadium' to mean 'revenue', when Arsenal were in the last days of Highbury they were Champions League regulars and one of the top 2 teams in the Premier League. So they could afford the wages necessary to attract top players. It's our relatively meagre resources in terms of the wages we can afford to pay that limit our transfer strategy, and it's also why we haven't been able to hold on to our top stars beyond a certain point. The new stadium would dramatically increase our revenue, thus allowing us to increase the wages we offer, thus allowing us to buy (theoretically) better players.

Economics inn'it.

Can someone point in the direction of some definitive evidence that we only paid £13m on Soldado? As it seems to be now bandied about as a fact.

I don't think there is any. Even if it was just £13m guaranteed who knows what the clauses where: £2mill for 20 league apps, £2m for European football? Nobody knows.

Brilliant manager who made great decisions in the transfer market, turned some players with potential into worldies, playing through a system and philosophy the boardroom and players bought and the fans were happy to believe in - all built off of a stability that had been present in the club for well over a decade.

So Dl is talking bollox when he says the Stadium will have no bearing on player purchases now or in the future as it will be seperate, read the Stadium thread last I heard it was to be funded by different sponsors.

Anyways this is not irk, I'll continue the discussion on the Stadium thread if ya want

I think Levy's getting a taste of his own medicine at the moment. It's been well documented in the press that we're willing to listen to offers on 7 players and this will affect who we bring in. I was listening to a journo on a podcast who says that a lot of buyers will sit and wait until the last minute knowing they can get players on the cheap especially for clubs who are desperate to get players off their books such as Spurs!

We're trying to offload players where there isn't exactly a stampede of clubs trying to buy them. Those that would be interested aren't flush with money and will hold on until Levy breaks or not.

I don't see anything happening until the last 24 hours. So I'm booking the day off, getting the beers and pizzas in and will be back then.

I dont know why you lot are fretting.

You do realise that Levy has absolutely no clue that the window is open right?

As far as he is concerned the first 5 games of the season are merely more intensive pre season games.

He has the alarm set for August 31st and wont even pick up the phone until he has had his breakfast, shined his head and found his high heels

There is no under value sale with Spurs. Clubs WILL pay what we want or we dont sell.

That is in part what letting players like Bentley, Gomes, Jena's to name a few, run down their contracts and leave for virtually nothing is about. Its about setting the price at where we want it.

Any consideration of the implications of that approach for us on the pitch are secondary unfortunately.

No but I think if you look you won't find anything from the club stating we paid £26 million for him either. Our interest was reported, then it was reported that Valencia were demanding Soldado's buy out (which was 30 mill euros so approx £26 mill) then it was announced we'd signed him.
The assumption was that we had agreed the buy out, but no fee or break down of the agreement was published. The club simply announced the signing, no fee mentioned, all the papers reported a price as "believed to be"
As I have said now on a number of occasions if you look at City buying Negredo for £16 mill plus £4 mill add ons Negredo having a very similar La Liga goal record and roughly 9 months younger people will have to make their own minds up about what Levy paid up front and what amount was add ons. The whole deal was because Valencia needed the cash but their chairman wanted to save face with the fans by implying he got the buy out rather than he agreed a deal that had lots of extremely tough add ons to bring the potential up to the buy out
