SO this thread has swung from talking about Neuer and Schweinsteiger (two of the best players in the world) to Steven Fletcher. Really is silly season!

OK Fletcher has done alright at Wolves, but you guys seriously think he would better for us than Saha? Thats straight up crazy talk! Fletcher has had a few good games (mainly against us) but I wouldn't say he has enough about him to be of benefit to us. If Defoe can not play in this system then Fletcher has no chance.

As the 1 striker system continues to just become more and more widely used, if you have 1 striker on the pitch why would you want Fletcher over Defoe or Saha?

Has Defoe ever been effective up front on his own or leading the line?!

No mate, my point being that its wound me up for years the fact that some people can't accept some people choose to play for the nation they believe they belong to. If I ever was lucky enough to have been a pro footballer than I would have given ANYTHING to play for Ireland as that is the place my parents are from and Its the place I have always called home even though I was born and bred in London. Quite simply, if the almost impossible happened and Ireland were to not want me but England offered me the chance......I would have declined because as I say it would be Ireland or nothing. Maybe Rhodes is the same and the way he spoke about the pride his dad Andy felt playing for Scotland, than I am inclined to believe him.

Just looked up his dad, apparently never played for Scotland and is down as 'retired English goalkeeper' - all I can work out from looking them both up is that Jordan sees himself as Scottish as he spent a lot of time there as a kid when his dad was playing in the Scottish league. So where did you get this bit from - "Maybe Rhodes is the same and the way he spoke about the pride his dad Andy felt playing for Scotland, than I am inclined to believe him." I'm not having a go and do believe the guy sees himself as Scottish just interests me as to how players decide to represent countries so would like to know where you saw him talk about his father's pride at playing for Scotland?

Just an odd thought about Verts. Anyone noticed that his agent is also Bassong's agent. I wonder if some of the prolongation of these tripartite talks could be about making it into a part-exchange deal?

Ajax would be a very good place for Bassong to go and rebuild his career.

I have to hold my hands up there.....I remember snippets of how he said he was proud to play for Scotland and the pride his father had....I just realised I was gettin my "Andy's" mixed up and must ave been thinking about Goram not Rhodes. I think It's me looking through quite rose-tinted specs . But my point was that not every born English player automatically has a dream to play for England.......Many Irish players of the previous era won't help in that argument as I'm not so sure former captain Andy Townsend or Mark Lawrenson would have plumped for Ireland over England originally, but I know there are players such as McGeady and Kilbane who decided the birthplace of their parents mattered more to them than their own birthplace..............But yes, my original point about Jordan Rhodes' father is clearly mistaken.

As of Summer 2012

Defoe >>> Fletcher >>> Saha

I worry about anyone who thinks otherwise
It doesn't really work like that though mate. Depends on the role you want them to play. Defoe and Fletcher would perform entirely different roles in the team.

I would agree in terms of value with that assessment, or total ability, but in terms of effectiveness for us, Fletcher is better on his own so arguably more useful than Defoe.

Since when did we become too good to try to pluck players from the lower leagues?

Last time I checked players like Joe Hart started with clubs like Shrewsbury. If we had a bit of foresight we could have bought one of the best goalkeepers in the world for £600k back in 2006. I bet people would have said "Joe Hart? Fuck that. He's a League Two goalkeeper! What the hell? We're Tottenham fucking Hotspur, dammit!!!"

Yeah he hasn't because he is not that type of striker, but the boy is a predatory finisher and has a good change of pace.

What does Fletcher have except the best hair regrow formula since Shane Warne. (lol sorry couldn't resist)

Can't believe people think Fletcher is a viable option for Spurs, when we currently have a tried and tested PL and International striker like Louis Saha, and Defoe who scored 20 goals this season despite being a sub most of the time. Sure Fletcher has score 12 goals in his last 3 PL season but he is the main striker for these teams he has played for, he is the ONLY one who has scored in those teams...can you imagine how many chances he must get? It's easy to say they are shit team and probably they don't create that many chances, but you put Saha or Defoe in those teams and they would score more goals because everything is focused on that 1 player.

Possibly, how often do you see part-exchange deals happen?

Saha's 33 and his knee isn't what it once was, he has massive problems staying fit. As for Defoe, we have to change our entire system for him to play. Not ideal.

I'm not sure anyone has said we're too good to buy players from the lower leagues - Lennon, THudd, Walker, Dawson, Naughton all performed in the lower leagues. I actually think Rhodes might be a useful No 3-4 striker to have as a grower. (y)

The point is we've not had ITK linking us to these players, so this isn't the place for discussion on them.:)

Really?

It is massively different banging in goals in league 1 than it is in the prem. What make you so sure that he could step up?

Agreed, and I was at the L1 play-off final yesterday and can tell you now that I thought he looked dogshit.

Nick Powell on the other hand... Pace, strength and did you see the goal he scored today? Wow!

Shame United are strongly linked :(
