Julian Green is not going to be better this season that Chadli/Townsend/Lennon, this has to be a buy for the future. He's played one sub appearance for Bayern's first team and one sub appearance for the US in the World Cup. He's not going to come into the Premier League and play right away. Would be shocked by that happening.

(And I love what his potential could be as a USMNT fan but he's not what we need right now)
He's the hero we deserve, but not the one we need right now.

In all seriousness, he wont be better this year, but he would get time in the cups and possibly PL. If we do sign him, I'd hope we'd still go after another winger. Sell Lennon and Townsend. Sign Green and Griezmann/Kono/Depay/Rodriguez. Settled.

Unless it's Lamela or The Soldier..................
You realize we paid those fees, because of the Bale deal, right? That won't happen in a normal window for us (at least not twice in the same window). We sell to buy and Bale was the biggest sale, so we generated the funds. Same thing is happening for Liverpool after the Suarez deal.

My understanding is that the club has done a lot of work in raising the profile of Spurs in the US. I guess they see a lot of potential there which would have only been highlighted further by the recent tour.

Would be surprised if we weren't looking at some of the USA team's brightest and best. The Julian Green story makes sense even if it's for primarily non-footballing reasons.

Unless it's Dawson

Not necessarily. Southampton are going to be considerably weaker. With Liverpool having bent them over and stuffed their arm up them as far as it could go, Southampton's ability to attract players has greatly diminished. They may have the cash, but with their team so badly depleted of quality, they aren't exactly a draw for a player with any aspirations of success. I can't imagine they're realistically in the market for the kind of player we are.

Ideally we want another Vertonghen... Whoever Southampton have their eye on, I doubt it's the class of player we should be or are looking at.

( EDIT: Apologies, was actually replying to the post that sam1972 was replying to)

Liverpool have done well to capture lovren he looks a good player and will address their problem of a shitty defence like ours i think they conceded only a couple less goals than we did last year.
I would have liked to see him at spurs but i can see why he would prefer them although i cant think of anyone else around who we could get for the Price we want to pay and be of the quality that can sort ours out.

Schniederlins contract expires in 2017. Lovrens contract with Southampton also expired in 2017.

To get him cheaper, we need Schneiderlin to kick up a fuss imo.

Otherwise it will definitely be £20m or more.

I hope he doesn't do that. I hate it when players do that kind of thing to instigate a transfer, whether it's at Spurs or another team. If both clubs can agree on a valuation then fair enough but if Southampton are asking for more than we think he's worth, we should move on.

Uhhhhh, no? There is a difference between the quality of players the clubs can conceivably sign, IMO.

It depends. Maybe if our scouting network could find players like Lovren before they become 20m players then that would help us in the transfer market generally rather than having to buy these players once they become ludicrously overpriced (and 20m for Lovren is ridiculous money).

I can't remember the last time we unearthed a gem like that. I suppose Bale, but he was hardly unknown when we signed him. Sandro maybe?

Anyway...I wouldn't dismiss the players that Southampton are looking at just because they're not as 'big a club' as we are.

And whilst we're on the subject of Southampton I can't help but feel they'll now really push the price up on Schneiderlin so any ITK on him is probably now a bit defunct.
