It was in response to a question asking who are alternatives to Lovren since he's Liverpool bound.

Yeah and a pretty good list, I think a few would be beyond us now such as Laporte, Inigo Martinez, Garay and Mangala who seem to have CL clubs sniffing and maybe a question mark about Papadopoulos's fitness after quite a long time out (but when fit a very good cb, same with Tasci another good option when fit but missed a lot of playing time) but not every quality player will necessarily get to a CL club as many already have quality options so not unreasonable to list them all.
There's another CB I'd add to the list if rumours about United looking for two first class CB's proves true and that's Phil Jones. I know he's not the finished article yet and sometimes inclined to be a bit rash but I think he can become a top CB if he gets a regular starting role at CB. I think his versatility has actually hindered his development as a CB but there's a top player there just needing the extra experience from regular games

So regarding the ITK on Caulker (yes I know I'm a bit behind)

Did we have a buy-back option in the sale? Is that what is being referenced by people here?

Thanks in advance

Decided this window to only chat when there was something to actually chat about. This post isn't it by the way! Boy is there one pile of shit to wade through. This is meant to be a ITK discussion thread. Come on guys - it's getting worse, and some are even worse than worse.

ITK from last summer - from Rebrab

Caulker: 20-odd percent sell on (not profit) fee and first refusal. This means no buyback clause, but if in 2 years time they accepted a bid we could get him for 20-something% less than any other teams.

Nb. I have heard variations of this with a higher sell on fee.

Caulker was a better and more experienced CB at (then) age 21 than most now playing in PL now.

Player of the year in division 1 atr 17/18 and in the Championship at age 18/19 and Rogers delight at Swansea in PL at age 19/20.

And strongly rumoured to be on Roigers list at Liverpool

Is that Brainden Roigers per chance?...............

Does say midfielder/forward so may have had a deeper role previously. I have no idea.
According to Wiki he was a winger until last year when the Equador manager put him up top after Benitez died. Explains why he had 27 in 131 then 18 in 22. Bit of a late Henry move it seems. As a 6-8m punt it may be worth a go but no more i'd say given age and lack of reputation. I guess he'll be playing England tomorrow night so we can have a look - maybe this is why the "he's available" chat is coming around this week. A showcase before the showcase!

We'll I said it was a showcase. Guess the not so ITK about us being after Enner Valencia certainly got him noticed. We'll it will now he has scored against England!!!

And yes I was quoting myself.....

AVB had no interest in developing young players - he only wanted to buy ready made.

Name me ANY young player he helped develop at Spurs ? Or at Chelsea before that - which is why Sturridge left for example.

AVB actually played Sturridge more than any of his predecessors by a very long margin. Games in AVB's season = 28, games the previous season 1, games season prior 2.

AVB also played Rose instead of Ekotto and Townsend instead of Lennon and Lamela until he was injured. Redknapp was much worse than AVB, he played kids in games he didn;t give a shit about then never played them again or packaged them off for other coaches to educate.

Sherwood introduced Bentalebm then dropped him for players like Chadli and Sigurdsson to play in CM.

So if he goes for 9 million, we either take 1.8 (to go along with the 8.5 we made on the transfer) or we pay 7.2 minus the installments left. But in essence we either make 300k on a year long loan to Swansea or make 10.3m.

And it comes at a time when we look likely to let Kaboul go due to his knees with Dawson now over 30. Plus Vlad still kind of an unknown variable.

Seems like a tough call. I could see the logic in getting him back and in letting him go and taking the sell on. Be interesting to see how it plays out.

Rose had had a season with Sunderland so was reasonably developed. BAE had clearly blotted his coptybook, but I think AVB was sure we were buying a LB, but when we didn't had no choice other than to play Rose - I cannot rationalise the limited cover (Naughton, Vertonghen, Fryers) any other way.

Townsend looked good at QPR (plus had 100 games in lowerleagues), and wasn't expected to play so much, but Lamela was almost a no show through injury.

But AVB didn't take a young player without experience, give them their debut and further develop them.

So I'd argue that Rose and Townsend's experience cam,e almost by accident. But AVB probably didn't want Caulker as a starter with his limited experience.

However lets see whether Poch does fancy Caulker, as ITK suggests we need to make a move or lose him

Not sure about Caulker, he is decent but doesn't have the pace at the back required if Poch wants to play a high line.
