That's my point though. His vision came from being schooled in the game by Lobanovsky. That's why none of them could move on. Lobanovsky was ages ahead of his time. We're just catching up to him now. The system was the star at Dynamo, not the players. Had the man not died of a stroke, that would have happened with other players at Kiev as well, as he rebuilt them a second time in a post Soviet economic reality.

And I shouldn't call him a poor player. Rebrov was a good player......but good in the way a player like Szabolcs Huszti is a good player. He was nothing special other than learning under one of the game's true geniuses. The price-tag makes people over-romanticize his ability or over-criticize his faults.

And yes Misfit, of course Sheva was amazing at Milan. He went to Chelsea at an advanced age. I was being facetious on that point.

A bit unfair on Rebrov - the guy had wonderful natural technique - he may have been taught/coached into having a great football brain, but he was a quality player aside from that. Years ahead of the squad we had at the time.

Rebrov's main problem was that Teddy Sheringham played in his position and was never going to be dropped.

I see the Brazil match has been called off, I guess that increases the odds of Leandro signing before the game, could go on for another few years now.

simple.

If the new guys could hit the ground running, that front six could make us dark horses for the tile.

I never thought I would find myself saying that, back in the Rebrov years....

I'm about to report Rob and Archibald to PETA. They are overlooking a goat who has not been fed in sometime. Somebody needs to feed that f'n goat.

Might want to get a couple of full-backs who can defend.

Benny and Walker are two of the best full-back pairings in the league. They didn't do well last season, but there were reasons for that.

Naughton on the other hand was a walking goal deficit.

I don't think full backs are a priority, but we could do with competition for their places. Maybe Rose will provide that at LB, not sold on Naughton either. I put BAEs loss of form down to him recovering from injury - AVBs comments also suggest this. Walker seems to have lost a lot of confidence going forward, and his positioning is woeful at times - however his pace often gets him out of trouble. I worry how he will be if Lennon loses his place in the team because Azza does help him out a lot IMO.

My problem with both is not their footballing skills but their mental approach. Benny is way too lackadaisicle and Walker has a pea sized footballing brain.

As opposed to Walker who was a running one.

Naughton didn't come close to anything as stupid as The Walker and Ekotto Liverpool away benevolent fund.

That's one game. Yes they were both poor, but ultimately Benny has shown how he can be an incredibly smart footballer numerous times, and Walker is still young enough and equipped with the raw material to become a very useful player.

On the other hand every time I saw that Naughton was playing I assumed we started the game a goal down. And yes Naughton went well past both in terms of idiotic performances.

Not sure if this has ever been posted before. It's worth a read and should add some perspective to the rumors we will all hear during the transfer window, whilst nothing is happening: http://fourfourtwo.com/blogs/fourfo...he-truth-behind-the-transfer-rumour-mill.aspx

The Tabloid Journalist Half of what I do with transfer stories is stay on top of things. Who is coming to the end of his contract at a big club, or what positions does that club need to strengthen? Then you target those players’ agents and their clubs and make the calls. A recent example is Tottenham. The minute they weren’t in the Champions League, some of us would be hitting the phones to see what that meant for Luka Modric and Gareth Bale. Those kind of stories are 50 per cent of the rumour mill; the rest will be tips that come from agents, players, clubs…

The Premier League Player On one occasion, a team-mate of mine wanted a move. He picked a day when we had a day off, then tipped off a local journalist that he’d been made to train away from the first-team squad, with the kids. They made sure there was a photographer there in the bushes. He wasn’t even supposed to be in training at all but he came in specially, just for the photos! That story alerted a couple of people and a few days later he was beaming in the changing room, saying, “It worked: [top Premier League side] have been in for me.”

The Agent Some clubs leak news of who their targets will be in March or April because tickets for next season might not be doing so well. There is one high-profile chairman who is notorious for this.

The Sunday JournalistIt’s not always the case that the player is party to any of the intrigue. A few years ago I heard Jermain Defoe was wanted by Sunderland and by coincidence I was interviewing Defoe the next day for some sponsor. So at the end I turned the tape off and asked, “Is there any truth in this Sunderland stuff?” He said, “We’re the last to know. Sometimes people I’ve played with get a call that just says: ‘Congratulations – you’re going here’.”
