Its cool, Don't smoke but wish i did so i could forget that we are entering pre-season with Defoe as our only recognized striker and Modric still half way through the door.

You would need a lot more than a smoke for that!

I think we will be fine though - if we start the season with only Defoe I will be shocked, staggered and dumb-founded - all at the same time.

I think Kane is going to be included as one of our strikers. I'm pretty positive about that kid as he's got that habit of being in the right place at the right time. Still...no prem experience and we really do need another two strikers.

As for Modric...I've got a horrible feeling that when he's eventually sold the club will try to pass Sig off as being his replacement all along, (in a similar way to the Carrick/Zokora transfer).

I was starting to fear this earlier today aswell, fuckin hope not! I am sure AVB had assurances of certain signings / targets / funds available before he took the job on, we shall see.

Am I missing something has the window shut? Lets leave all are negativity until we know what we have come the close of the window. Yes we have had some bad news yesterday but if anything it shows things can change in an instance so things can still turn out good.

Not nearly as sad as when you wanted us to sign… Actually, who was that Baggies CB you wanted us to sign instead of Kaboul? And you wanted us to spend the Berbatov money on Robinho, I recall. That would certainly have resulted in sadness. Quite a lot of it, I suspect.

isnt much of an update rather than calming those who were going down the doom and gloom route
I'll take it. Hope it's official soon. Genuinely warmed to him last season and he's a fantastic signing. Just what we need. Finally, a talisman who won't agitate for a move to a "big club" or just a loan. He'll be one of our leaders this upcoming season. Him and Rafa.

Worst case scenario is a middle 3 of Sandro, VDV and Sig. That is still pretty damn good. It's excellent in fact.

I be happy with ade being wrapped up. If he stuck away those extra chances last season we would all be raving about how amazing he was...his got it in him to have a great season with the right players around him.
I'd actually take dzeko and johnson from them too if they have a clear out. Dzeko could be a beast and would provide a massive threat from crosses (which if we play 4-3-3 can see a lot more of happening) and Johnson as cover for Bale, Lennon.

Good to hear, but people have been saying that for well over a week now. Hopefully they'll announce it already.

Everyone has lost the plot a bit today.

If the season started tomorrow, the only real problem we'd have would be no Ade.
There are 6 WEEKS to sign players and whilst it'd be great to get busy and sign everyone tomorrow, it's just not possible.
I like the fact we're still bargaining hard. I like the fact one of our best players still hasn't got away and we'll get a top fee for him.
It's presumed that 1-3 players are coming in and there's no point anyone coming in if they won't improve the team.
If only Ade comes in we're still strong and easily superior to 15/16 teams in the league, a couple more and we're challenging.
I'm confident that AVB's tactical nous and strategies will get us playing even better football than Redknapp did. The cutting edge we lacked under Redknapp can be found with some extra nuance. A few more goals, turn the 1-0s into 2-0s, the 2-1s into 3-1s, the 1-1s into 2-1s, beat Man Utd, maybe!

So. In conclusion. There is plenty of time.
Rome, last I checked, wasn't built in a day. I believe it took a January transfer window too.
PANIC NOT!

edit: As I bloody type: Ade is ours. So there, all problems solved!

I guess fans were thinking due to very little spending in the last few seasons, this was going to be the summer where we push the boat out a little with a manager Levy trusts. That coupled with ITK on big name players and the foreign investment rumour has created a kind of false hope?

I've written this up a few times. And I was fortunate enough that the right search found it, because I was a wind-bag on this one. But other than being an idiot, I do actually care about the economic side of this and can add value on rare occassion.

So here it is. This is why we haven't spent over the last few seasons.

And this goes back to Levy's Modus Operandii. Even under Arnesen/Comolli when we were seemingly freely spending, we weren't

04/05 in £16m - out £11m
05/06, in £34m - out £17m
06/07, in £48m - out £25m
07/08, in £32 - out £15
08/09
summer - in £66m - out £67m.

so we can see that he allows spending, as long as a portion is recovered (68% over those years)

and then Harry takes over
January - in £42m - out £0
09/10 - in £41 - out £26
10/11 - in £12 - out £7 (but £6 of this is the sell-on value of Bent)
11/12 - in £8m - out £40 million (but £28 million of this happened on the last day of the window)

He spent lavishly at the beginning and sold a bit but not enough. Going into the final day of the transfer window last summer, Harry has spend during his time £103m and only recovered £45 (43% - up almost 9% on Bent's sell value. Lucky)

Then Pavs, Palacios and Crouch go for £28 million and suddenly Harry has recovered a vast amount of his spending. Now he goes from 43% to 70% of his purchases offset by sales.

So we can assign blame as we are wont to due over these things, but Levy wants money brought in to cover most of the money spent. I would say he's cool with about 65%. And because Harry had been unable to offload talent for a stretch (this is during the financial crisis so bad luck), he wasn't getting much. Now that he's back on Levy's terms, I would think that Harry has £15 plus sells this summer, possibly a little more if we make CL.

Economics is a science when politicians don't use it and one that we shouldn't ignore.

This doesn't mean that Levy isn't going to give more cash this year than normal. But it explains why he wasn't hording it for '11. And remember that we have increased our wage bill significantly and that is a much better way to spend money than transfer fees.

2 players in the whole prem last season had double figures for both goals and assits. One is joining us, the other is leaving Arsenal. Happy days.

I think Lyon will buckle and we'll still sign Lloris but Moutinho is gonna be too pricey and we'll probably move on, I want us to sign him but not for the amounts being mentioned. It's just my opinion but I also think that Porto just wouldn't want to sell to AVB as they were pissed at him for leaving for Chelsea.

Hamsik or Strootman would do for me, with the latter being the more likely if we did bid imo.

I'm aligned to your thinking but I do think with us starting the season with a new manager that we should wrap up everything as soon as possible. Obviously this is wishful thinking and I fully expect us to make a couple more signings right up to the start of the season...but AVB brings with him a philisophy and I think will need time to be embedded throught the club!

Thanks for that HappySpur, was very informative. I'll admit, I didn't realise we balanced the books so much with transfers out. Going by the economics of the last eight years, a lot will depend on how much we get for Modric.

Shame we haven't got an oil barron backing us, it really is so difficult to compete these days without one. :(

It is funny how with us Spurs fans, how its only we are going to sign *enter world class player here* or we are going to sign Henderson, we really are morons at times (me included, Im not getting on no high horse)

Its why I don't feel comfortable with non spurs fans on here

Good to see Ade is wrapped up but its been nearly 3 and a half years since we signed a player with a fee over £10million :(
