The Kyle Walker-Peters Thread

Boldly, and quite possibly naively, I've come to the conclusion that Kyle Walker-Peters should be our first-choice right-back next season.

Statistically, he played 22 games in 2019/20, and was on the winning side 13 times. In half a season, he produced 5 assists, finding his man with 20% of his crosses (for context, Trent Alexander-Arnold managed 23%), and he drew only 2 yellow cards.

Considering the form he showed during his loan spell with Southampton, he's better than any right-back we've been linked to as far as I can tell. He's young, English, and has come off a spell that would interest the club if he wasn't already on our books. He knows the club and the players well, and having finally had a run in a top-flight team, he knows the Premier League.

I've seen nothing from Max Aarons that has impressed me more than what Walker-Peters has produced since January (I realise this is the exact type of statement that bites people in the arse), and unless we have an ace up our sleeves, it strikes me as sensible to let him grow into a team, without a clear and obvious long-term right-back, throughout the 2020/21 season.
I agree that some of the RBs linked to us could well be worse than KWP. I've been surprised that we've never given him a proper chance as our back-up RB (at best, he was 3rd choice RB & 3rd choice LB, with most of his playing time out of position at LB). My guess is that he hasn't shown enough in training to impress our managers.

His stats are reasonable, but don't give me any confidence that he'd be an improvement on Aurier. Aurier's stats are similar (played 42 games, 8 assists and 2 goals). I'd sooner go by the combined opinion of Mourinho and Poch than stats. Bale was on the winning side 0 times in his first 24 games for Spurs, so I'm glad we ignored stats on that occasion!

Well various outlets including SSN say he'll be playing for S'Hampton (unfortunately), with Hojbjerg coming to us.

This one is really going to annoy us, he's gonna play well for Southampton and transfer to a bigger club in 2 years and we're gonna look like mugs, thank you Poch - not your finest decision as Spurs manager.

Poch could and should have played him more, but you can't blame a sacked manager for decisions that are made when he is no longer at the club.

If there’s any player that we’ve sold recently that should have a buy back clause it’s this fella

If he was such a talent then Levy and Jose would be doing everything they can to keep him and giving him assurance of his future here. They're not, instead they're using him as a bargaining chip for a guy in the last 12 months of their contract which tells you all you need to know of what they think of his potential. I'm sad he didn't work out for us but I can't see him going to a club bigger than us in the future.

Very strange situation, you'd think that considering our struggles at right back and the possibility of Aurier moving on this summer, we'd keep a young, homegrown fullback who just impressed on loan at another Premier League club. The club must really not rate him that highly.

Or simply, KWP let the club know that he prefers to leave and carve out a career at Southampton. For context, he's played 9 times for Southampton in the league this season. Meanwhile for Spurs, he's played 12 times in the league since the 2017/2018 season.

17/18 season - 3 appearances
18/19 season - 6 appearances
19/20 season - 3 appearances

At 23, he's better off going to a team where the manager believes in him and actually plays him.

I get the impression the club had massive hopes for him (hence the repeated contract extensions) but now that 2 managers have had their doubts and he's had a taste of first team football elsewhere, the writing is on the wall.

I suspect even if we wanted him to stay, his heart is probably set on playing week-in, week-out after his loan spell and I doubt he'd risk another season being a potential 3rd wheel. He'd probably been promised gametime for years by Poch and he's 23 - is he really going to risk being benched by Jose for another season here?

If I was him I'd be absolutely desperate to sign for So'ton at this point.

He is a good player with a great attitude. I wish him well at Southampton. I think he is a little bit too short but he may make up for that with his application.

This could really come back to haunt us.

Him along with Edwards are incredibly talented, imo two of the best youth players to come through our ranks, I can understand why he is not playing for us yet but to sell him for 12m could be a huge mistake. Hopefully there is a buyback or sell on clause or something.

I hope he has a great career and he does desperately need to play.

We certainly seem to cock up the RB situation in recent seasons. Walker, Trippier and now KWP all gone and we're left with Aurier.

What's funny is I don't even think he's had enough time at Southampton to judge how good he is yet, despite playing regularly at the back end of the season, yet some people still think they had enough time to judge him here.
